Hiawatha light-rail service suspended, road and bridge closed

The failure of a cable support on the Sabo bridge has resulted in closure of the bridge, suspension of light-rail service at three stops and the rerouting of vehicle traffic on Hiawatha Avenue.

The bike bridge is only 5 years old and cables are snapping? Not good. Time to lean on the design and construction firms.

Let me tell you a practical reason why the choo choo is a boondoggle, bridge needs work, buses/cars can go around, take other routes, choo choo.......not going anywhere anytime soon.

While this is a great looking architectural structure this malfunction calls to mind if the design fully considered the stresses of the varied Minnesota climate? It's ironic that such a structure, provided to enhance our transportation options ends up limiting and obstructing so many other options when it breaks down...

How the heck does a cable fail? Inquiring minds want to know. Was this a steel cable; or one of the new-fangled carbon fiber cables the architects are in love with? Details, please.

"What a waste."........How is that, elrichman? If there was a design or construction problem, let's hold the people accountable that are responsible for it. At least it didn't fall into the river.

Most people who have done commuting or a recreational ride from the Mississipi to the Minneapolis Lakes in South Minneapolis understand that the bridge is a great idea, it makes crossing Hiawatha much less hazardous. Execution seems to be a bit flawed though.

As gas prices rise public transit, buses and bikes will become even more important. Heading toward $4 and we get off cheap. Gas was about $8/gallon in the UK yesterday.

I hope they fix the lights in the area while they're at it - something is off with the timing. The light will blink green before going to yellow and red and then just stay red...

There is nothing wrong with the design concept. Most likely the structural design is alright too but the cables were not properly and equally tensioned.
