Patrick Reusse: Politicos play dumb and blind to a stadium's dazzling upside

  • Article by: PATRICK REUSSE , Star Tribune

Some way, we have wound up with politicians who would put the cleaver to a great asset for the state's largest city, and then offer the silliest of explanations.

NO how about the media paying for it! $4 million for TV stations and $1 million annually for newspapers! Oh you missed showing up for KSTP!

Patrick is right on. Having viable stadiums improves the social and economic status of downtown, which in turn makes the entire area (and the entire state for that matter) a better place to live.

Great article. Some people think Minneapolis will be just peachy without any monetary investment.

Now please support a $27 million investment in St. Paul's Lowertown: a ballpark for the Saints that also would house high school, college and amateur teams, and eventually could spawn a Minnesota Baseball Hall of Fame in the neighborhood.

A constant drumbeat of the anti stadium crowd is the new stadium will only be used 10 times a year. This will not be a football only stadium and the Vikings donation more than covers their fair share of the cost. As far as the Metrodome, it is and always has been a dump (show video of dome collapsing at this point).

Mr. Reusse, I find your commentary misleading at best. Nigh on 30 years and the Dome hasn't done anything magical. Why would a new stadium in the same place do anything different? I don't understand why you would make such a claim. Even die hard Vikings fans don't want it in downtown Minneapolis. Why do you?

"A sensible plan -- pricey but doable -- is now in place for a new stadium for the Vikings and those hundreds of other entities that have used the Metrodome."

Indeed, there will be monster truck shows, concerts, high school baseball, high school football, etc. The Metrodome is JUST FINE for all of those activities! We certainly don't need to build a BBBillion Dollar stadium for high school sports!!!!! Only the vikings "NEED" a thirty year old facility replaced. That comes to a BBBillion Dollars for 10 viking games per year ... 30 hours PER YEAR (more or less) for a BBBillion Dollars!!!

Its not the politicians. Its the people as well. Politicians are afraid because they want to get re elected and they know most of the public doesnt want it. You said it yourself pat, when you pointed out that the referendum would not pass.... Can you blame her for acting as an agent to the people she represents?
