With 27 turnovers, the Gophers let Illinois hang around. But with 5 minutes left, they stepped up.

This is the kind of game that the Gophers have been letting slip away with regularity this season so it is nice to see them learning how to put teams away late. Maybe it took Banham to break the Illinois curse of the last three years (when Illinois went up by ten in the first half I remember thinking "I am so sick of losing to this dog team every year"). Kellogg, however, shined again late. She has truly been instrumental in closing out the last two opponents down the stretch (although Banham's final three was the backbreaker). Very heartfelt speeches by many of the players in the senior night ceremony, BTW (I especially liked Kiara Buford asking the announcer to say her name over the loudspeaker one last time). Now that the commendations are out of the way, a continuing note of concern - 27 turnover!? Really!? Come on, now. I don't think you'll be this lucky against a better team (and the next two games against Ohio State and Penn State certainly qualify as games against better teams). Go Gophers!

I know...TURNOVERS!! That seems to be the thorn in this team's side this season. Well they got the "W" at least (as they should have). Tough road schedule ahead for sure.

Ugly game but kudos to the ladies for a tough defensive performance last night. They also finally generated just enough offense at the end to seal the deal. With that being said, I have to call out Coach B for how she handled honoring her seniors. It had been tradition to start your seniors on Senior night as a way to honor their commitment to the program, particularly for bench warmers like Nicole Mastey. Coach B chose not to honor this tradition, which is her right but when time came to give Mastey her time in the limelight, what was her choice, 10.7 seconds at the end of the game! Despite how close the game was, I don't think it would have hurt the team for Coach B to have given Nicole a 2-3 minute run to honor the four years of silent service at the end of the behch. By all accounts, Nicole has been a supportive and enthusiastic member of the squad even with the knowledge that she would likely never see a minute of playing time. such dedication deserves more than 10.7 seconds of recognition. Shame on you Coach B; you're lack of class is showing!!

I totally agree with raymondb62...it looked like the bench had to remind Borton to even put Nicole in for those last 10 seconds. Remember just 2 years ago when the seniors were all in hot water and her quote was something to the tune of 'the problem starts at the top...the seniors'? That year she never even acknowledged the seniors in the senior night postgame ceremony. That was the ultimate lack of class, but last night's move shows that she still doesn't get it.

In response to "Informed One"...I am that announcer and it was and remains a very SPECIAL MEMORY. I was surprised, yet honored when Kiara posed the question.

raymondb62 - this is the same coach who was to improve her "communication skills" with her players after half the team jumped ship the other year. Sometimes actions speak louder than words. You're right, shame on Coach B!

Agreed agreed agreed ... putting anyone in with less than 30 seconds is a slap in the face!! And, it has happened to more players than just Nicole, unfortunate for her it was also on Senior Night!!!!!!! What a cruel way to treat a player who has showed so much dedication.

This was another senior class that Borton for the most part just wants out of here. The 14th ranked class coming in but Borton wasn't able to do a thing with them. Banham's got talent but she will never be the player she could be in this program.
