Vikings support Ponder, but will monitor top QBs

A committed relationship with Christian Ponder won't keep the Vikings from checking out the top quarterbacks in this year's NFL draft.

They may have a chance to draft RGIII and he definately intrigues me. His arm is stronger than ponders, and he he is way faster. i like ponder but it would be a no brainer to pass on luck( who will be gone) and very hard to pass on RGIII. kalil also would be an all pro lt for years

if RGIII is available when we pick we better either draft him or trade him for picks. Ponder will be good but RGIII can be great so please draft him. This guy is a freak and very smart. Kalil will be a great pick if RGIII is unavailable.

If the Vikes really wanted RG3 they would probably need to move up to the #2 pick by trading up with St. Louis. Ponder could be used to trade up. Give the Rams Ponder, the #3 pick, and Phil Loadholt to play RT for the Rams and get the #2 pick and Rodger Saffold to play LT for the Vikes. We take RG3 and the Rams take Kalil to play LT. Just having fun playing GM but to me this could look good for both teams with what both teams then have at quarterback, depth at quarterback, and left tackle. Saffold played LT very well two years ago for the Rams before he was injured last year. Do the Vikes want RG3? Just an idea to get him.

Spielman's tweet to Ponder - When looking for a house, rent rather than buy.

Aside from his unbelievable physical abilities, RG3's youtube interviews ought to be checked out so to acquaint yourself with a young man with a highly amicable and respectful "Kirby Puckett-like" personality, who was raised the right way by two active Army sergeants for parents. As a Vikes fan, my greatest fear is that they pass on the kid just to see him become a superstar -- a la Marcus Allen, Warren Sapp, and Aaron Rodgers --while Ponder levels off as an average QB (let's face it, Ponder's physical attributes don't equate to a 'high ceiling' in terms of potential). Paul Allen swore they had to take Ponder when they did in last year's draft because the Redskins really liked him. If that is indeed the case, would the 'Skins prefer to give up, say, a second-round pick for Ponder instead of a king's ransom for RG3? If the Vikes then came away with RG3, two high second-round picks, and two third-round picks (they're banking on receiving a third-round comp pick for Sidney Rice's free agent departure)... I'd say that would be a pretty sweet deal!

Russ Lande, the only player evaluator who predicted that Tom Brady would be an NFL starter one day, says this about RGIII in his top 50 prospects column: "2. Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor. Griffin is in a virtual tie with Luck as the best player in the draft. He has excellent arm strength, accuracy and is off the charts when it comes to leadership and smarts." On the other hand, he has Kalil ranked as just the #5 prospect. Mike Mayock doesn't even have Kalil as his #1 OT (he ranks Iowa's Reilly Reiff as the best OT prospect)! And long-time scout and now draft analyst for Walter Football, Charlie Campbell, notes that Kalil's run-blocking is currently below average and he plays a lot like Robert Gallery did when the latter was taken #2 overall. Bottom line: maybe we should reserve judgement on these prospects until at least they get through the Combine. Let's face it, if any of them donate a dirty urinalysis they'll be falling as far as Harvin did.

You heard it here first: NO ONE will trade up for RG3!! The Dolphins will sign Matt Flynn with the Packers OC now Miami's HC. Since the two teams drafting before them aren't looking QB its too risky for the Browns to trade up with their #4 pick when they can still probably get Ryan Tannehill with their #22 in the case some team does trade up for Griffin. The Redskins aren't going to break the bank trading up for RG3 when they're rebuilding as much as the Vikings are, and they could give up far less to move into the back-end of the first-round and take Brandon Weeden who at 28 years old is projected to be a starter right away--which is perfect for Shanahan who needs win now. As for the Vikings not getting an elite prospect if they were to trade down, David DeCastro is considered the best guard prospect since Steve Hutchinson; who coincidentally, is who he reminds everyone of. Since guards never go that high no matter how good they are, he'd be a nice safety net if nothing else since Hutch is at the end of his career and Herrera stinks and will be a free agent at the end of next season.

I'm ok with Ponder being the future at QB. Realistly though, the Vikes are going to have the weakest QB in the NFC North for the next 3 years, whether its Ponder, Luck or RGIII. Looks like a lot of 3rd and 4th place finishes to me. At that point, 3 years down the road, AD is a little more broken down too. IF HEALTHY sign P. Manning to a 3 year incentive laden contract. A little cash upfront, but mostly a performance contract. As we all saw last season, Ponder needs to make better pre-snap reads. Who does that better than Manning? IF Manning is 90% he's as good as Rodgers. Draft the tackle at #3. Sign Reggie Wayne, to make Peyton comfortable and address a major need for the Vikes. Kyle Rudolph becomes an All Pro in 2 years. In a perfect world, the D will get to do what they do best... rush the passer. Because the Vikes will be scoring and ahead more often. The Vikes have a shot immediately at the playoffs and beyond. Wouldn't you like to have a motivated Manning, out to prove he can still play? Ponder gets to learn the NFL game from one of the best QB's ever. Just like Rodgers did in GB. Don't compare this to T-Jack. Ponder has a better upside. If Manning can't play down the road because he is re injured, you're not on the hook for that much salary. It's going to be difficult to watch Ponder, taking a pounding every week because he can't read the CB blitz. GO VIKES!!

RG3 will be a superstar. Ponder will be a journeyman backup QB.
