Carbon monoxide is a very real and very serious danger. My parents installed a CO detector because its required by city code but they thought it was just a waste of money. One night it went off and they evacuated the house, the next day they had an inspector check everything and he found a leak in their furnace. The CO detector saved their lives and to this day they (and myself) are strong believers in having at least one in every home\apartment unit.

Yes Carbon Monoxide is dangerous. Everyone with a combustable fuel source should have a hard wired alarm. The evacuation of the multi-family building (Stevens House Cooperative) in Mpls. 2 years ago was nearly a tragedy. The laws for apartment buildings have been in place for many years. Unfortunately, inexperienced owners/managers don't know about inspections and carbon monoxide detectors. Insurance companies may the the go to folks on this one. They should insist that the yearly inspections are done on both the heating and alarm sytems. Regarding starting a car in a garage? Don't ever do it!
