There's no need to bring in anyone with local connections.

Good article Jim. That's the problem with Minnesotans, they are too afraid to venture outside of the box. The Twins are a classic example. It is time to get past this stuck in a rut mentality that we have.

Jim you can't be serious. No one who hasn't been here before will EVER understand the special culture and tradition we have here at Minnesota. This isn't like any of the 49 other states or any of the other 113 schools that field a D1 football team. We have a rich tradition of winning that no one who isn't old enough for a Senior discount at Denny's remembers. Who else will know to call Dave Mona if there's a problem? Why, an outsider might call someone other than Tony Dungy with questions! I knew we never should have let Souhan in from Texas - what does someone from Texas know about winning football anyway?

There are thousands of great candidates who know how to manage a marketing team to raise money for a popular athletic program. The challenge is choosing the right one. Success with another major university would be the experience I would look for, not another small school AD.

Great article. Keep an open mind. If there is a great candidate, who has MN roots thats great. But MN roots should not be required. Arena Carlson and Paul Wellstone among other leaders her came from across the country.

the gophers have tradition? o dont know about that if they won some big ten championships and some big bowls then they might have tradition they havent won a championship since the 60s that is unbelieveable take your time and do it right get somebody good who is going to be here 20 years at least this time think before you hire.

It'll never happen. Minnesota sports always tries to do everything on the cheap. You get what you pay for!

I would argue that an up-and-comer from a mid-major school wouldn't have the name recognition that might be needed to raise substantial amounts of money for facility upgrades or replacement, such as Williams Arena. Hence, I'd lean toward Jeff Diamond and Glen Mason as prime candidates. They know where the money is in this town, and Mason has lost the chip on his shoulder he had as the Gophers' football coach to reveal a very likable personality. He and Jerry Kill have become fast friends.

For all of us wannabees that dream of a successful gopher athletic department, driven by a championship football team, I strongly suggest that you stop looking from the bottom up and start looking at the top down. Rumor has it that we have a new president at the "U" that understands the importance of athletics, and how a successful football program can bring in big time donations from alumni, most of which would go to the general fund of the University. The biggest problem the new President will have is getting the board of regents to buy into that concept. So how is the makeup of the Board of Regents decided?? They are appointed by the Governor and the State Legislature. So what we need is a legislative body that looks favorably towards athletics and appoints like minded people to serve on the Board of Regents. It doesn't make any difference how many highly qualified applicants the President interviews if the person across from his desk ask the question do you have have the support of the Regents? and his best answer is I'm working on that. The response from the applicant will be call me later when you have a 100% commitment, at this time I am withdrawing my name. Without 100% support from the Regents we are doomed to lavish at the bottom of the Big Ten and it won't make a hill of beans as to who the the new AD is...and you can take that to the bank.

Judging on how Kaler handled the Maturi golden parachute- I look for more of the same good old boys club with Dave Mona and the others who have enabled the last decades of failure with the likes of Joel Maturi

Good article Jim. Continued Minnesota inbreeding will give us what we have had in the past. The U is truly a dysfunctional organization top to bottom.
