Fidelity: Average 401(k) balances end 2011 largely unchanged, despite higher contributions

BOSTON - Workers stashed money away in their 401(k) retirement plans at a faster clip last year but didn't get an immediate reward for their savings strategy. Fidelity Investments, the nation's biggest 401(k) administrator, says the average account balance was essentially unchanged in 2011, compared with 2010.

"unchanged in 2011, compared with 2010" - A more interesting look might be comparing with 2007.

Wow, my 401(k) did pretty well in 2011. I'm certainly glad my account isn't at Fidelity. Fidelity is the worst for hitting participants with fees, the new fee disclosure requirements will open quite a few eyes. Clients love Fidelity because admin fees are low but that's because everything is passed down to the participant.

Need to do the old dollar cost averaging and not try to time the market. At least they didn't go down.

Adjusted for inflation my 401K has lost money over the past 10-years.
