The question: How can "nice guy" Joel Maturi show his face anywhere, taking this kind of money for what, by anyone's assessment, was a middling at best job performance?

Joel's already cost this University between $6-$7M with his dumb extension/firings & other bonehead moves. Hif fund raising abilities? He's alienated more alumni than he's endeared himself to, this extension makes no sense. One more year & I'm hoping we'll never hear from Joel again.

I don't have a problem with the opportunity fund. I do have a problem using it to payoff Maturi. They shouldn't put educators in charge of money. No wonder the U is always whining about money.

If he "cost" the U $6-7 million, he made more than up for it with the $90 million he raised for the stadium.

Can someone please count the number of people at the University of Minnesota making multiple six figure salaries...and then explain -- exactly -- what these people do? The University Administration is a monster bloated beast. Anyone who questions this gets his or her rear shown the door. The University is about preserving status quo for those who were prescient enough to realize what a $$$ bonanza of a career working for the U can be. Come on, Star Tribune, call in your best reporters and get on it. Eric Kaler is already a huge disappointment. He's no change agent. He's a preserve status quo kind of guy. Who, by the way, got rejected by his last place of employment to be the top guy. No libel, here. All facts. Verifiable facts. The University Administration is one of the last bastions of scam in our state.

Could have given 468 students a $1000 tuition break, but better to drop it in Maturi's pocket...

When they call for money I explain I help my family with their tuition bill. Last time they wanted money for some student's internship in Europe. Get a job if you want to travel to Europe. Publicity like this does not help fundraising. I donate directly to the 4-H Foundation but a general donation, not anymore.

The U has been diverting funds to athletics for years. Many years ago they were taking the mandatory student activities fees and diverting the funds to an athletics facilities fund that most students could not use. The U needs to keep the athletics funds separate from the rest of the U so the public has confidence in public funding and so the contributors know where there donations will go. When will the U adminstration wise up? The athletics department is a continuing embarassment. Football and basketball have been both bottom tier rankings and bottom tier graduation rates in the Big 10. Rah rah rah.
