This building which is to some extent historically protected, is an Uptown classic. We are lucky it is protected. In the nineties the air conditioning was still run off well water which it drew up from their well. It probably will go for far less given the historic designation and limited ability for use. Lets make sure it stays protected ~ ! ~

Anyone else find the irony in using the words Uptown and Suburban in the same name?

I loved the most current set-up... where you could have brunch while watching old-school cartoons. Great place to have brunch with the kids. I hope someone buys it and keeps it going... it has a lot of potential!

This is a great, historic building and I very much hope that'll find a new owner who's willing and able to invest some money and to bring it back to life. I could think of a couple really cool ideas. Along with the renovation of the Uptown theatre - this could be another gem in the neighborhood. We lost way too many of those character buildings already

I've always wondered about the name too - was that location considered 'suburban' when it was built? It's a great building/interior.

The original name when it opened back in the 1920's was The Granada Theater. Which echoed the Moorish design of the theater and many of the area buildings in Uptown. Why it's called Suburban World in the heart of one of the most urban neighborhoods in the state is ironic to say the least. I hope someone has the vision to reopen it as "The Granada of Uptown" and turn it into a great destination for films, plays, and live music.

Geminos is correct, it was originally called the Granada. However, in the early 50s, the owners of the World Theater in downtown Minneapolis purchased the Granada and renamed it the Suburban World due to its proximity to the suburbs.
