Goalie coach seeking solution to Backstrom's shootout woes

Bob Mason, Niklas Backstrom's goalie coach since 2006, is at a loss as to why the Wild goaltender can be so poised in games, yet when it comes to shootouts, he's like a fish out of water.

Disgusting game. Schultz needs to sit a game or 2 for his stupid 4 penalty game. I don't know how Fletcher can expect this team to compete with half of the team on loan from Houston, he needs to make some trades now. I'd also like to see Yeo take some responsibility for the miserable PP and make some changes.

Russo are you trying to rip off P.A.'s thoughts again and thinking Zannon should have been benched because he didn't speak to you after the Nashville game oh you are priceless

Somehow Bob Mason saying "Backstrom" and "impatient" in the same sentence is the last thing I would expect to hear.

I don't see any harm in bringing Harding in for the shootout if he gives us a better chance to win. To me it is no different than bringing in a closer in baseball. Some football teams have a kickoff specialist and a fieldgoal kicker. Sure getting replaced may affect his confidence but so does gettting beat just about everytime in the shootout.

Maybe it would be a better idea to not end up in a shootout in the first place. If you score goals in regulation, and your defense and goaltending are solid, you limit the number of shootouts you lose.

Guys, i figured out what the Wild coaches can't. Look at the picture. Backs closes his eyes during the shootout!

A shoot out is basically a controlled break away. The goalie has the advantage because he doesn't have the puck and does NOT have to make the first move. The key is in being patient and waiting for the shooter to move first. In order to do that you have to watch the body AND then the puck with peripheral vision. It's the only way you can process the information correctly so that you don't bite on fakes and move to early. If the goalie movers first, it's going to be a goal. A prime of example of where Backs is falling down on this is in the Chi game where he bit hard on Kane's forehand juke. The beauty of being able to wait is that you can actually dictate to the shooter which way he's going to have to move with your positioning and how patient you can train yourself to be - speaking from experience here!!!
