The Twin Cities has four outstanding ones at four different levels - Ricky Rubio of the Wolves, Lindsay Whalen of the Lynx, Rachel Banham of the Gophers and Tyus Jones of Apple Valley.

Seems like teams do better when their point guard is a distributor (Jason Kid) more than a scorer (Marbury, Iverson). It's better that everyone else stays involved than the point guard being the shooter. It's probably the hardest position in the league to fill, to get someone with that capability and mindset.

Nice article. Young basketball players would be wise to emulate any or all of these four. Learning the game from a team standpoint, passing, ball-handling, and leadership is where youngsters should start. We can't all be a PG, but those skills make all position players better in a team game. Let's hope Jones becomes a Gopher so we have these four to watch for years to come. Go get-em, Tubby. You built Rhono into a star PG at KY and can do the same with Jones at Minnesota.

Geez, do we need that much coverage of an issue like this? What's next, a three-page story on hockey players that are good at skating backwards? The Strib sports people need to find some more interesting stories. Please.

Hey Scottie - they put headlines on stories so if it isn't of interest to you, you don't need to choose to read it... headline said "what makes for a good point guard?" You were expecting a story on wintering over roses, maybe?

Great article... we are really lucky in this area right now... that certainly couldn't have been said a couple of years ago. We get Whalen and Rubio around the same time, both are dynamic players in their own sport and now we have 2 up and coming players. I hope Tyus stays home - that would be great!

I liked the article a lot. Nice work Chip! Every youth with aspirations to play basketball in high school and the select few that play beyond that --- need to read this!

hobie2 -- I didn't read it; when I was turning the printed page this morning I couldn't help but seeing the sheer length of the article. And here's a tip for you: buy the printed form, you'll truly "read" the newspaper; you only get a superficial look at the paper online.
