Prime piece of land north of Brainerd is in line to be preserved

  • Article by: DENNIS ANDERSON , Star Tribune

Minnesota has a chance, if politicians don't bungle it, to buy the 2,000 acres on the Mississippi River and virtually in the middle of the state's most popular recreation area.

I was ready to donate until the article mentioned a snowmobile trail through it. You might as well just let the dump expand into it then.

Why would we preserve nature? There is a billionaire that thinks we OWE him a football stadium!

Very interesting.....let me borrow a line from all the anti stadium folk who have been blathering on for the last two years. NO PUBLIC MONEY! NONE! SCHOOLS, BALANCED BUDGETS, MY WELFARE CHECK, MY UNEMPLOYMENT CHECK and so on...Pretty sure I wont hear that on this topic, just go buy it...Take a look people, this state has more public land than we know what to do with it. Every county in the state is trying to sell it to generate tax dollars. How's that Vermilion park working out? Have they found the money to support the infrastructure or employ the park rangers yet. NOPE

THE TRIBUNE INVESTIGATORS NOW HAVE A SCAM ON THE TAXPAYERS TO INVESTIGATE; PROMOTED BY ITS OWN DENNIS ANDERSON IN ITS OWN PAPER. THE SCAM WORKS LIKE THIS: MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS ARE PAID TO A CORPORATION (POTLACH) FOR LAND THE CORPORATION OWNS AS ENVIROMENTAL EASEMENTS TO BE USED BY THE EVER DECREASING NUMBER OF HUNTERS IN THE STATE. HOWEVER THE TIMBER AND MINERAL RIGHTS CONTINUE TO BE OWNED BY POTLACH AND THEY NO LONGER HAVE TO PAY THE COUNTY THE $26,000 IN PROPERTY TAXES. WHAT'S MORE IS THAT AN ENVIROMENTAL ORGANIZATION MAKES 7-8% PER LANDGRAB SO THEY DON'T QUESTION THIS "QUESTIONABLE" TRANSACTION. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING JUST GOOGLE BLANDIN PAPER AND YOU WILL SEE THAT 40,000,000 OF OUR TAXPAYER MONEY WAS SENT TO FINLAND (OWNERS OF THE MILL) FOR A EASEMENT. AND AFTER THE TRANSACTION WAS COMPLETE, BLANDIN APPLIED FOR PROPERTY TAX RELIEF EVEN THOUGH THEY RETAINED ALL LOGGING AND MINERAL RIGHTS ON THE PROPERTY. I VOTED FOR THE LEGACY AMENDMENT NOT TO PAY CORPORATIONS MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OR ENVIROMENTAL LAWYERS TO CONSUMATE THESE "TRANSACTIONS" BUT TO DO THINGS LIKE CLEAN UP OUR LAKES, FIGHT THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE SPECIES LIKE ZEBRA MUSSELLS. BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE UNELECTED LASSARD COUNCIL AND THEIR MOUTH PIECES (YES YOU DENNIS ANDERSON AND RON SCHERA) SEEM TO HAVE THE TRIBUNE TO CONTINUE TO PROMOTE THESE QUESTIONABLE LANDGRABS. MAYBE IT'S TIME THAT YOUR CRACK INVESTIGATORS LOOK AT THIS ARTICLE AND HELP REP. MACNAMARA END THIS WASTE OF TAXPAYERS MONEY.

ropein: you want to preserve nature, go buy land yourself. The state doesn't OWE you anything. Or offer over a third of the cost towards this preservation project. No? Cant, wont? Did not think so.....

Get this done! This is EXACTLY what the Amendment was especially designed to do/fund -- it meets almost all parts of the definition!

Price comparison: New Lake Vermilion State Park, 3000 acres, 5 miles of shoreline, $18,000,000. This property: 2000 acres, 5 miles of shoreline, $14,000,000. You decide!!!

$14 million for a piece of river bottom swampland!!?? Just shows what crazy things happen when you're spending other people's money. This is such a joke I have a hard time taking this seriously. Potlatch must be laughing uncontrollably over this one.

The picture of the guy fishing was hilarious...casting into a mass of weeds. Yes, this looks like an area we will all treasure spending our free time at. Plus, the fish are for it, the bunnies and deer, too!!

Hey, Legacy fund, I just had this vacant lot near Nisswa appraised for $3.5M--do you want to buy it? I might reluctantly part with it. Old gas station site, now returned to its natural state by leaving it fallow for 5 years. I polled the resident wildlife and they were unanimously supportive.
