There are things broadcasters could do to counter the sludge of campaign ads.
Commercial TV is just that. Time slots are sold the the highest bidder, that's why it is called commercial.
If I had my way there would be no political advertizing/campaigning until 30 days before an election.
You need a very thick skin to run for any political office. If the candidate is elected the reward for taking the beating is financial security. The odds of the winner making a difference politically are minute.
Best bet is to watch Discovery Channel, HGTV or the History Channel. Better for your brain and your sanity.
Bothersome commercials but at least it is a change from all of the Ford truck commercials. Does everyone need a 4 door, 4 wheel drive pick up to commute to work with?
With your remote control you can change channels or mute. I have not listened to political ads in a long time.

Thank you for bringing this problem to the forefront . . . But wait - are you suggesting that institutions of journalism actually be in the business of real journalism vs entertainment? That's so yesterday! I know about the financial realities for traditional news outlets, but a large part of the problem is that out of concerns for their margins they are forgetting their real mission.
I wish the local broadcast stations would sign a joint pledge to fact check all political ads that are submitted and to reject the ones that contain lies or out-of-context statements. That would go a long way toward cleaning up political campaigns. Or you could just not watch commercial TV and get your entertainment from DVDs or streaming during political season and "punish" the commercial stations for those horrible ads by not watching them.
