Topping the list of candidates should be a savvy fundraiser whom Gophers supporters welcome with open wallets.

Best post-mortem yet. The AD needs to level the recruiting playing field so our coaches have an even chance.

He doesn't have to be King Midas. This is a major state university not some small college. All they need is a leader who knows how to run a winning program by hiring good coaches and who demands results.

Comparing TCF to the Big House in Ann Arbor is very telling of how Maturi's small thinking has hurt Minnesota. While he was building the smallest stadium in the conference, Michigan was making the largest one even bigger so it now holds over 110,000 rabid fans. The Gophers are lucky to get more than 30,000 fans to show up at TCF and most of them seem to be supporting the other team. That is precisely why we don't have the revenue to compete. The U simply does not think big time and accepts mediocrity. Who wants to donate money for that?

@BCanniff: That's a silly post. The Gophers weren't going to draw close to $110k so they built a stadium that they could fill regularly that was designed to be expanded. It's called creating demand and MLB teams have been doing it successfully for years with smaller stadiums. It's also not the smallest stadium in the conference. Research your facts before you post.

It's interesting that the article used Michigan as a comparison. Before Don Canham was hired as AD in 1968, anyone could walk up to the gate at game time and buy a pretty good seat for about $5. Canham was a master marketer (and a great judge of talent by hiring Bo S.)who by 1975 turned Ann Arbor into 'THE' place to be on a football Saturday, and since then MI has never sold less than 100k tix for any home game. Tickets now go for about $60 per game plus most sideline seats have a licensing fee so MI earns about $5-6 million per game, with all season ticket holders prepaying by March, so that money is in the bank for 6 mos. prior to the first kickoff. This sounds like an awfully positive business model for MN to emulate, and hopefully MN can find an AD without an ego that prevents him from 'borrowing' successful ideas from other schools.

I spoke with the father of a former Gopher Football star player today. I can't reveal the name due to privacy issues. He feels that "Grinnin'" Glen Mason should at least be interviewed for the position. Smart, articulate, well-positioned, well-connected, knows athletics. Still lives in the State of Minnesota and likes it here. He told me he is predicting, that Mason will at least get a shot at talking to Kaler about the job! I agree.

Oh yes, and by all means, give Tubby a separate practice facility and then stand back and watch the championships and NCAA strong appearances roll in. I mean, having their own practice facility sure made that happen for the football team, just as Uncle Sidney told us that it would.
