The moral of this story is: Leave the cattle raising to those out in prairie country. Trying to do this in Orr, in the middle of the north woods wolf country, is insane.

bemmel: You are exactly right. "Saving" cattle and deer (a natural prey of wolves) is a ridiculous goal when they are all but wieners without the hotdog buns and mustard to a hungry wolf. The wolves job is to find a meal, whether it be livestock, a moose, or a mouse -- all will do. The farmer / rancher should not be in wolf territory (ideally), unless he wishes to raise his herd indoors. The North Woods is second rate grazing land, at best.

For the record: one of my grandfather's was born in 1889, and as a young man established a farm with rented land in Iowa. He found it less than suitable for what interested him, so he didn't head to the North Woods, he moved west to the prairies of South Dakota to eventually buy 3000 acres, marry, and raise a family of 5 children, and... cattle. Herefords and Black Angus. Coyotes, rattlesnakes, drought, and rustlers were a problem. The Great Depression was a problem. Wolves, not a problem. He was not a stupid man. 2 more generations stayed and farmed, expanding the farm to 7,000 acres. Wolves never were an issue.

I have spent a lifetime in the outdoors and have only seen one wolf ever...I just hope my son will get a chance to see one as well.

Totally agree with the previous posters-growing wolf food in wolf territory is a major gamble. I am glad he didnt get his $58,000. Yah, tough situation, continuing his dad's work, farming, all good stuff. Bottomline -Wrong spot to grow cattle. It is tragic that cattlemen think they are always right.

Somehow cattle ranchers come to believe that the entire world ought to arrange itself for their convenience. Sorry man, but sometimes things don't work out. Hey, my livelihood disappeared as well, and I'm not suing anyone. Nor do I believe that the government owes me anything as a result.

Raising cattle in the middle of wolf country makes as much sense as putting a day care center in the median of 35W.

If you would like to come see a wolf, please come visit Orr. I live 1 mile out of town and last Tuesday as my husband drove into town there were 6 in the field between our house and our neighbors at 9am, feeding on deer that had been hit by a car. Since then I have seen two more in that field and another 1.5 miles south of town just last night. I will not argue that this is not ideal cattle country, however there is a real problem up here that needs to be addressed.

I think people are missing the point of the article, Would a hunting season really control the wolf population? I don't think it would. Why have a hunting season for an animal you can't eat? You want to kill it for a trophy, for the hide and head or just say that you did kill one. Maybe having a bounty or control the number that is to be kill in problem areas around the state is the answer?

When they start coming into your yard and taking your pets it is time to do something. They have no fear anymore...Thumbs up to Julian!
