Souhan: Perkins remains rooted as a Twin and as a Minnesotan

  • Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune

The Twins' best relief pitcher in 2011 rode out some tough times as a pro, sticking to what he knows best.

What's the over/under on how many comments will be published here before someone asserts that Perkins should be a starter?

I like Perk in the bullpen and perhaps he should be in the mix for closer. Considering the starting rotation, can you really blame anybody for throwing out the S-word?

I hope the Twins appreciate Perkins, their diamond in the rough. How many MLB pitchers can improve their pitching velocity 7 mph?

Hopefully Perkins stays healthy and has one hell of a year.....this team needs all the arms it can get, and if Zumaya comes thru, this bullpen could be awesome again......

I am glad that Perkins is not closing. He's the best reliever, so why waste him in the 9th inning to protect 2-3 run leads. There's endless amounts of pitchers that can do that. I like seeing him come into the game in the 7-8 inning in a tie game, down 1 or up 1 and needing to get out ot a jam. That's when you need your best bullpen guy, so hopefully it stays that way.

Perkins definately was a bright spot in the bull pen last year. However he needs to be used a bit more selectively this year. It seemed like he wore down a little as the season wore on. Hopefully the rest of the bull pen can improve so the chance of success of all of them is improved.

And yet another great example of the current state of Minnesota sports. We just read an article about... Glen Perkins.

"And yet another great example of the current state of Minnesota sports. We just read an article about... Glen Perkins." Not sure what your point is. Perkins had a very good year by any standards so it wouldn't be unwarranted to write about him no matter what market. His situation two years ago makes his present story more compelling.

If Glen can do as well or better this year as he did last year, the Twins may have a very difficult time getting him re-signed next year.
