We had -8˚F here in Bemidji on the 5th and 6th of December. Some forecasters predicted over a week ago that the cold behind this front would be worse than the models predicted. We were supposed to be around -8˚F tonight... but it's -15˚F at 11pm and could go further before it clouds up and snows tomorrow. Wednesday morning will be well below -20˚F. That said, it has been a very mild winter thus far... though not the mildest. 2001/02 and 2006/07 both were warmer than this year so far. In fact, this year has followed the general pattern of 2006/07, only a bit cooler. November 2006 was warmer than November 2011 and December was also quite a bit warmer (11.4˚F above normal compared to 8.5˚F above normal this year) though there was some colder air in early December of 2006. After a few drops into the fridge in January 2007, we had a very cold February capped off by two blizzards in a week. Despite the warmup coming after this cold snap, winter definitely is not over. I expect February to be cold. And it is a La Niña winter. They do often begin warmer and end colder and La Niña springs do tend to be colder than normal (while autumns/early winters tend to be warmer than normal).. so don't put away the shovels and snowpants and scarves yet.
I think the headline should more correctly read "Subzero cold in line for a record late appearance in the Twin Cities" as most of the rest of the state has been below zero several times already.
most people from the twin cities think that their little geographic area is Minnesota
"record late first appearance" would read better than "record late appearance". The latter reads like a prediction for a catastrophic May cold snap.
We got minus 8 here in Nimrod. One time, it was minus 48 and my truck wouldn't start. Hope it don't get that cold tonight. No, minus 8 is ok but i dont like it much colder than that. Sometimes, it gets real cold and then gets warm again. Sometimes the wind makes it feel colder too. But them Twin Cities people think that it gets cold there when its always colder here.
