The Gophers are part of a trend in which prep players -- such as Jordan Hinojosa -- graduate early and start college in time for spring practice.

Coach Kill is bringing in players with the dedication and work ethic you want to see at the U of M.

I have mixed feelings about this trend. On one hand, I hate to see kids give up their senior year - prom, graduation, etc. But, for fall sports, coming in early allows them to adapt to the college life - classes, campus, etc - without the full preasure of competing at the college level.

It's not a sacrifice if you have talent. Most guys would jump at this chance rather then worry about a party.

This story is so imcomplete. He's from Florida. I'd like to know about the recruiting process. Why did he choose Minnesota? Was he heavily recruited by other schools?

My main concerns are: 1. Can the young man even read and write well enough to be college material? 2. Can he do basic math? I don't care that he's leaving H.S. early. Is he ready for college???

Thumper - you have legitimate questions. And, a good reason as to why entering college early may be beneficial. Entering early may allow him to adapt to the college atmosphere at a slightly slower pace than if he did entered in the fall.

prepguy - I don't think the story is that incomplete. The story isn't about the recruiting process but rather about the decision to leave HS and enroll in college early. If the article were about the player and what he can bring to the team, yes, it would be incomplete. But that isn't the story's focus.

The article does strongly suggest that this particular young man has the focus needed to do well in university. As a teacher you tend to see two things in young students: IQ and grit. This young man sure seems to have the grit part. Good luck to all these guys. Go Gophers!!!

Foregoing sr. yr. HS to sit in a dorm with horrible weather, of the worst team in the big 10 during spring, knowing nobody. This guy needs to not take himself so seriously and learn to enjoy the here and now.
