The City Council passed a law that requires taxis to accept credit cards by June 1. Opponents, however, worry about saddling drivers with transaction fees.

Simple math: Cab driver gets $200 in credit card charges a day of that he has to pay ~ $10-18 in transaction fees per day: Cab driver works 5 days a week: fee = $50-$90/Week-$200-$360/month, $2,400-$4,320/Year Average Cab driver salary (Google Search) $34,000/Yr lost income anywhere from 7-12% Perhaps there is something else here that wasn't in the article. Could easily see a guy with family making $20K getting whacked with this taking a 12-21.6% hit: And we all know these fees go right to the richest banks and bankers in America! It looks (from the article) like quite the reverse Robin Hood the city council pulled off here! PS: What happened to the 50+ comments last night?

Neither consumers nor merchants should EVER pay transaction fees to use debit cards. The blame for this lies directly on the banks. The have reaped BILLIONS of profits over the last 30 years because it costs the bank a FRACTION of what it did in the 70's to handle a retail transaction. Handling cash or processing check transactions are costly to banks to process and they can't charge a fee for them. Banks are fighting tool and nail against any restrictions as this is a gravy train of profits for them.

Fees and greed aside it's about time. I constantly hear from out of state visitors about the oddity of the cabs in this city not accepting credit cards. Good decision from the eyes of the consumer.

It seems the article implies that the drivers themselves have to pay the transaction fees. The taxi COMPANIES should pay the fees, not the individual drivers. If a driver is an independent company himself, then he is a business and the same holds true. CC are convenient but I'd rather pay in cash than be worried that a stranger has my CC number (and yes, the same could be said for stores).

Welcome to 2012, Minnesota. After living in NYC I was shocked to be turned down from multiple cabs when they told me they didn't take cards. Seems like it's true that it takes the Midwest a few years to catch up with what's happening on the coasts.

Everybody loves the service, nobody wants to pay for it. I like steak so the restaurants, grocery stores and farmers should hand it over any time I ask. They all make too much money.
