Reusse: Tebow's popularity a faithful endeavor

  • Article by: PATRICK REUSSE , Star Tribune

The Denver quarterback has shown questionable passing skills, and his fans seem to be basing their passion on his overt religious beliefs.

OMG. I'm rethinking my stance on this, because it can NOT be possible that I actually agree with Reusse on anything. Tebow may be a nice guy and a decent athlete, but he sucks as a QB.

No argument that Tebow's faith causes people to like him as much as hate him. Here are a couple examples of what you apparently are missing about his football abilities: 1. Let's see Brady run an option, fake the pants off a Pitsburgh Steeler defensive end, and turn it up field for a 10+ yard gain. Did you find that Tebow effort lucky, boring or unworthy of admiration for a QB? 2. Was the Tebow roll-out, stiff arm of a MN Viking linebacker to the ground, throw the ball downfield to a cutting reciever for a touchdown Spurgeon Wynn like? This is football, Patrick. It's OK (and effective) to see/use something else beyond the dropback pass.

Patrick, Tim Tebow's popularity has NOTHING to do with favor gained by people because of his faith in the one, true God. We live in a sick country. Most people in America HATE God (actions speak louder than words). This country’s people are filled with greed, gossip, murder, sexual perversion, hatred of fellow man, not to mention idolization of hollywood, sports figures, and material things rather than the Creator Himself. You name it. If it’s wrong in God’s eyes it’s happening in America. Not what Tim's God intended. No, Tebow's popularity has more to do with God's grace allowing a faithful, less-than-gifted passer EXCEL in a league where he otherwise would not belong. Take it up with your Maker, Patrick. He's the One responsible.

Brady voids more talent in his morning constitutional than Tebow could muster in his entire, soon to be forgotten, career. Comparing Brady to a stiff like Tebow is laughable. Brady has three Superbowl rings and will be a Hall of Famer. Tebow has done nothing at the pro level. Get a grip....

Most people hate people who wear god on their sleeves and proclaim that god would actually care about someones athletic ability, especially based on their faith.

Have you forgotten Eric Liddell ("Chariots of Fire" ring a bell?), Patrick? Read his real life story, and you'll find that all the sports sages of his day questioned his form and talent, too. Yet, he outran everyone. Why? Because he had the true heart of champion. A huge heart can make up for a perceived lack of talent every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

It's good to have a disucssion on Tebow's example, Patrick. People love him because of his courage to genuinely profess his faith in God, and to give him credit for everything he has.

You are quick to point out his QB rating, but fail to realize God, throughout history as recorded in the Bible, uses the very ordinary person to do extraordinary things, so that we know it is God. Peter, John, and James, Noah, David, King Saul, Aaron...and many more were ordinary men doing extraordinary things.

It's ok to be religious, if that's what it takes to get you through the day. But to believe or even briefly think that God, if such a thing exists, gives a crap about football, is delusional, at best. Take a look around people. If God exists, he isn't meddling in your everyday lives. He is definitely a hands off omniscient being. Or do you think he's letting children die around the globe because he's busy helping Tebow win football games? Then he's just a cruel and unjust God.

By the way, Tebow had a low completion percentage, but why is there now a term recognized...Tebowed. What does this mean? Have you read about Tebow's QB rating in the 4th Quarter? How about his QB rating in his amazing come back victories? How about his
