The 85 percent ethanol blend has always faced challenges as a motor fuel. Now, the end of a federal tax credit poses a new one: higher prices.

E85 is a complete joke. I tried it once in my new F150, and my gas mileage dropped 30%!!!. Why should I pay more per mile for fuel even after I stole money (70 cents per gallon) out of all of your pockets? Besides that, the truck ran rough and had way less power. This "green" crap is just that- a scam driven by a bunch of limosine liberal Ivy League nerd professors (like way too many of our presidents). Bill G.

At a 5% blend, ethanol makes sense as an oxygenate substitute for MDBE. E10, E20. And E85 are expensive environment damaging boondoggles.

re: ruphina: the scam was driven by those who profit from ethanol; re: rolfindy: latest research reveals ethanol blends don't produce an environmental pollution benefit ethanol subsidies always were a scam, and the government requirement still is. Take it out of gasoline. Besides that, it has driven up the price of almost everything you eat.

How I hate to see corn used for gasoline while it could be used for food. Here in Iowa, about 60.00% of the corn grown, is used for ethanol. Just think, 20 years ago ethanol probably wasn't even a word.. How things have changed. I know the farmers like ethanol, because it gives them another buyer for their corn crop. But I have to admit, ethanol probably isn't the best thing corn should be used for. But look at it this way, what are the alternatives? Oil is going to go away some time, and we need to be prepared.

The entire ethanol program has never been anything more than a farm subsidy. Ethanol's lower energy content and resulting lower fuel effeciency is not a surprise to anyone except most consumers. I believe any potential environmental gain of oxygenated fuel is offset by the fact that you have to burn more of it to go the same distance compared to non-oxygenated fuel. Also, the impact on the food market by the elevated corn prices has been devastating for many people. It is time for government to get out of the corn/ethanol market.

And yet ALL conservative support the tax credits to the profitable oil companies. Funny how they say they don't support subsidizing private businesses but they actually do subsidize profitable private companies. How about standing up for your convictions, if you truly have any.

pennpride, do you support the government getting out of the oil business also or do you support the tax credits and subsidies they enjoy.

Ethanol would not exist if the gov't didn't mandate it and subsidize it. The negative consequences of gov't market interference is higher food prices, marginal land tilled, destruction of wildlife habitat and massive use of ground water. Ethanol is a classic boondoggle forced on us by elected officials who think they are smarter than us and the market.

Oil is going to go away some time, and we need to be prepared....says who? Al Gore? It strips the land to grow corn over and over again. Uses 6 gallons of ground water to produce 1 gallon of corn squeezes. We have a HUGE oil supply here, along with unlimited natural gas. Now we just need a new president to compliment it, rather than demonize it. Gas was 1.72 when the kid took over.
