Weather 2011: Going to extremes

Weather memories tend to fade quickly. But two events make 2011 stand out: the May tornado that sliced through the heart of the metro area and the lightning-sparked, drought-driven September Pagami Creek forest fire.

Yes, people, there is global warming. And no, it has nothing to do with the air temperatures right now. Global warming is about ocean temperatures and ocean currents, and how they affect the atmosphere and our weather. Unstable, strong, and unpredictable.

We have seen this before, it will happen again. Climate change is real, because it changes all the time.

It's true, the climate is in a constant state of change. The difference this time is that the change is observable in the course of a lifetime.

No denying climate change. Always has, always will.

Climate change has been around since the beginning of time. The "man-made" global warming argument is nonsense since we've been in a cooling period for over a decade. So everyone on that bandwagon jumped ship over to climate change to suit their flimsy argument that we are destroying the planet. Go back to the news headlines in the 70s by the mainstream media panicking that we were in a cooling phase and heading toward an ice age. It's cyclical....and it's not measured in a week, a year or even a decade. The greatest injustice is that the government uses this as leverage to control our daily lives. Listen, I'm all for recycling and making smarter choices for a healthier planet....just stay out of my life and get your hands off my wallet.

There are two types of Carbon, Carbon 13 and Carbon 14. One is produced naturally as in nature, ie decomposition of organic material and the other is produce by the burning of fossil Fuels, ie Coal, Oil, Gasoline. The Carbon as a result of the burning fossil fuels has been on the increase. CO2 which is Carbon and Oxygen has been on the increase, once again, it is the Carbon from the burning of Fossil Fuels that has been measured for the increase of of CO2. Carbon from the natural decomposition process has been relatively stable. So those of you who believe that the burning of fossil fuels is not responsible for the increase of CO2 are wrong. CO2 is a greenhouse gas which traps energy of the sun which leads to an increase in the ambient temperature. Yes, there are natural cycles of warming and cooling that have gone on through millions of years. There have been times in history where temperature change has been just as dramatic in as short of 100 years. Our rise in temperature is not unrepresented. What you should be concerned about is the reliance and the environmental affects burning of fossil fuels have. The Earth is constantly in a battle to even out. Stability is it goal, we experience that with thunderstorms, which is a release of energy so that the atmosphere can become stable. The next decade will be interesting because the last 10 proved nothing.

What about the bizarre weather that hit the rest of the country? 289 tornadoes in 3 days in April that killed numerous people, and wiped out 75% of the city of Joplin, Missouri? What about the worst drought in history in the south? The flooding in the Northeast? Minnesota isn't the only place that experiences weather, nor is it the only place that experiences extreme weather.

So many denialist claims to debunk: "...Climate change has been around since the beginning of time...">>>>and 7 billion people depending on ample food supply and stable climate have not. What's your point?..."...we've been in a cooling period for over a decade....">>>>This is factually incorrect. Global sea temperatures are continuing to rise..."...Go back to the news headlines in the 70s by the mainstream media panicking that we were in a cooling phase and heading toward an ice age...">>>>There are no such headlines. A single article appeared in Newsweek magazine in the 1970's with this speculation. Not even one climate or weather scientist ever staked their reputation on this idea. Not one..."...it's not measured in a week, a year or even a decade...">>>>This is true. Luckily, the data set showing the increasing and accelerating temperature trend goes back much further than that..."...The greatest injustice is that the government uses this as leverage to control our daily lives...get your hands off my wallet">>>>This last statement explains everything.

Those who deny that this is happening, in the face of an overwhelming mountain of evidence, will never, ever listen to facts or reason. It's not even worth trying any longer. Just encourage them to move to low-lying coastal areas and let evolution take its course.
