Hartman: Extra draft picks will help Vikings rebuild

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

If the team can do as well selecting players as they did in the 2010 draft, filling the roster holes will be easier.

A 4th rounder for defensive end Ray Edwards?? THAT'S IT? What happened to the 1st Rounder and the other pick that we were supposed to get for him if someone else signed him??? Talk about Frustrating, I suppose the owners screwed this up, always changing the game for the worse. Thanks to the owners, the draft is less significant then ever, if you draft a good player, next thing you know, he's gone and you get nothing...

What % of 4th rounders actually stick in the nfl?Pretty small I would dare venture. After getting excited watching the wolves in the first game, they turned around and forgot how to play defense again.

The problem is that it will be Spielman in charge of using those extra picks. Therefore, if they get a Chia Pet and a bag of magic beans out of them we ought to consider it one of his better drafts.

Exactly how does Sid see last years draft class as a success? I'm ok with Ponder and Rudolph choices, but after that I would say it's suspect at best.

Sid, you have been saying the SAME things for 52 years (and counting) about how draft picks are going to help the vikings re-build and t has yet to happen!!! That's OK because you have been saying that the vikings will win the Super Bowl / World Championship for 52 years(and counting) as well and that has never happened (nor will it ever happen).

Well Sid, I hate to tell you, that you are wrong. But the chances of the Vikings getting two fourth round picks for the loss of Edwards, and Rice is not going to happen. The way the formula works is such that the Vikings probably get a sixth or seventh rounder when you bring into the equation that the Vikings signed Charlie Johnson a LT who has started all 15 games so far, and any compensation for Rice will be negated by the signing of Michael Jenkins. They don't just give you picks for players lost, it is an all around formula that includes your free agent pickups, and how the players you lost played with there teams this season. No way the Vikings will end up with two extra fourth round picks. It is rare that a team gets multiple before the fifth round.

Looking at how little production the coaches have gotten out of their picks last season I won't count on any big improvement, unless they trade up and get Luck.

Sid's article is a repeat of his last 25 years of purple analysis at this point in every viking season and only the names change. Whatever Sid has to say in regards to the purple it never turns out to be correct and it is ALWAYS the lowest common denominator!!!

I would like to know how anyone is ok with Vikes drafting ponder last year in first round. NO ONE WANTED HIM. His weaknesses have come out front and center. He was a 4th-6th round pick.

Sid just wrote about the 2010 draft and the upcoming 2012 draft? I know Sid is old and wise, and should never be questioned (because he's always right)... but what became of 2011?
