A lot of hopes are riding on the new Southdale Herberger's -- both for store owner Bon-Ton and the venerable Edina mall.

Sorry, but Simon's forced relocation of Ralph's Shoe repair shop has caused me to rethink heading to Southdale Mall. Had Simon treated Ralph's better I might be inclined to shop Herbergers and other stores at the mall.

The Herbergers store at Southdale is terrible. Very congested, stuffy, and it has no Home Dept. I would rather travel the 2 miles to go to the Bloomington store. Not much of an attraction for Southdale.

"I don't see why Bon-Ton would invest so much capital in building a [best of class] department store if it was worried about its long-term financial health," Sprague said." --- Are there any minimum qualifications to be a council member? Bon-Ton sales down from last year, and 2011 earnings are a negative $5.00/share. D

"The real estate firm is also negotiating with Edina to secure another $4 million to $5 million in public subsidies to fund additional improvements. The package includes $1 million in tax increment financing (TIF) and a zero-interest loan. Simon is pushing the city to eventually forgive a portion of that loan." --- Simon Property Group is brilliant! The Edina council members can tell their citizens it is just a loan. But then Simon can have it all worked out so they never have to pay the loan. Very strategic! The little voters never have know to about this gift to Simon Property Group.

I think it's a good alternative to Macy's for what I buy - I like the store and when I've been there it's been very busy.

Perhaps his current location was nestled between two others that one lessor want to use. Perhaps he and his little store were like the little old lady with a shotgun who tried to keep a freeway from being built.

From what I understand, Simon not only forced Ralph's to move but also pay the thousands of dollars to move into a higher rent location.

Southdale needs a St. Cloud level Scheel's store. Herberger's is a good addition but Southdale is still lacking.

There is no home store, no reason to go.

Herberger's needs to decide if it is competing with Macy's or Kohl's and JC Penney.I'm not impressed with Herberger's.Southdale is still a viable mall.Customers have choices. Both Eden Prairie Center and Ridgedale are fairly close.I'm turned off by the Mall of America and enjoy shopping at Southdale.I still like an enclosed mall over a place like Riverdale Mall with its free standing stores and chaotic traffic.I also hope that Southdale does not suffer the same fate as Brookdale.Brookdale was also a wonderful place to shop at one time.
