I can see trouble brewing ahead for this youngster. No different than parents living vicariously through their kids in sports. At some point it all falls apart when the kid doesn't measure up.

Great story! This kid has a great destiny, though one personally challenging to him and his family. Best wishes to them all.

A great story that allows people of every faith to begin an understanding of another culture. Keep up the good work. May the family be blessed with the strength they will certainly need to let their only son go follow his proclaimed destiny. After all, We Christians had a similar story in our faith life that began many centuries ago.

I don't know much about the Dalai Lama's beliefs but I do know 2 things:1. he has a great sense of humor 2: he will never tell anyone to fly into buildings. Good luck to our young fellow here.

ford1949, how is this child going to disappoint his parents?? He has already been determined to be a lama and is in training. This isn't football or hockey, and the youngster seems to be taking everything in stride. Pretty impressive for a 5-year-old. His mother is having perfectly natural feelings. For a Buddhist, it seems that a lama is akin to how a Christian views a saint but they do it in reverse (e.g. the lama is a living person). I feel bad for his mom (and dad), but they know he will be a respected leader and he's only 5. How many U.S. parents know that about their kid when they're 18?
