This seems silly. I'm sure Hamline knew Emmer's conservative views long before they started talking to him about a teaching job. Emmer was never shy about asserting his views on anything. That alone tells me it is not Emmer's views that made them not want him as a professor- maybe it was his teaching style, or dogma in the classroom (as opposed to open discussions), or they didn't feel he was all that smart (I thought his rival for the Gov nomination, Seifert, was much smarter than Emmer). Note that I'm not a Republican, but it certainly isn't "views" alone that cost Emmer this job.

Like my Grandpa used to say, "There is no one more intolerant than a Liberal with a cause". In this case the cause is their stranglehold on the education of our youth and their refusal to allow diversity of thought. Makes me wonder what they are afraid of?

More likely your opposition to spending any tax dollars on education cost you your job. And rightly so.

If you've been vocal in a public venue about discriminatory ideas -- and Emmer's views against same sex marriage are discriminatory--then you should not be surprised when some potential employers don't choose to hire you. A university that teaches tolerance is a bad fit for Tom Emmer. Sometimes a price is paid for what you say and do, Tom.

His views should cost him a teaching job at Hamline. If Hamline is serious about building an inclusive environment (which they claim to be), a person with such bigoted views about marriage should not be given a soap-box.

Yeah, and? I guess that makes two jobs you've lost because of your views. Maybe you should think about that, Emmer. People always say to be careful with what you put out there in public fora, because potential employers are always watching. Now you know that doesn't just apply to the little guy. A liberal arts university like Hamline, dedicated to a high standard of education and diversity, isn't going to want Mr. Gays Are Bad as a professor. Why should it risk alienating potential students, alumni, and once and future donors by hiring you? Keep looking. Maybe Bob Jones University is hiring.
