Hockey-mad Winnipeg got its wish with the return of the NHL. Tonight, the Wild will get an up-close taste of a Jets party that's only beginning.

Good for Winnipeg. Just like the North Stars, the Jets should have never left Winnipeg. Glad to see they got a team back in a market that deserves it and will treat hockey as the big deal that it is.

100% agree with you april24! Atlanta?! Really? Give me a break! I was very glad Winnipeg got their hockey team back!

Interesting that the Strib blames an old arena as one of the Jets' problems in the 90s. Kinda makes you wonder how the Yankees and the Cubs and the NHL Rangers even make a buck on their decrepit old facilities. Ya think it MIGHT have something to do with the quality of the product on the ice? There's a CFL team in Winnipeg, but there's no major league baseball or basketball competing for fan dollars. Get it out of your heads that a shiny new facility is the key to success. It provides a number of TEMPORARY construction jobs and a bump in attendance until the novelty wears off. After that it's the quality of the team that makes the big difference. Meanwhile the hangover of 20 years of payments continues.

Winnipeg should have an NHL team as should Quebec (Hello, Coyotes? Islanders?). The NHL is finally shedding the notion of expansion to the South and other non-hockey territory. This is TWICE a team failed in Atlanta. And as for the product on the ice...they are doing nicely after a horrendous start. Kane and Bfuglyn are legitmate stars and the young core of defenders should keep this team in games for awhile, despite the awful game in Detroit this past weekend.

If Winnipeg could get the Jets name back, makes a guy wonder about the crappy name the the Minnesota franchise has.

esdee the allure of new stadiums is as much due to the significant increase in revenue the teams get as a result. No small factor in the decision on whether to stay or leave as revenues decline towards--or below--expenditures.

Former North Stars defenseman Brad Maxwell played a lot of games in Winnipeg. He has two strong memories: "It was colder than hell, but a great place for hockey," he said..... Isn't Hell known to be warm?

essdee09, the old Winnipeg Arena was built in 1955. It ws severely outdated and had no luxury boxes. Also, if you've ever been there you would know the view was awful from the upper level. You were essentially watching the game by looking between steel beams. Quality. The team needed a new arena, and the MTS Centre is a beautiful (and very loud) facility. Should be a fantastic game tonight, my two favorite teams playing.

Go Jets Go! Looking forward to them coming down in February.

I'm thrilled to have Winnipeg back, and especially in the Wild's division again next year. Having an NHL team makes Winnipeg a "big" city again, and it's just nice to have another one of those close to the Twin Cities. I just hope they schedule future games on weekends, as no doubt fans from both teams would travel to upcoming games. A few weeks ago I saw a full family decked out in Jets gear at the Mall of America -- and there wasn't even a Jets game here!
