Very cool. An old history teacher of mine, a Mr. Johnson, expressed the opinion that America would not have gained its Independence, but not for the confluence of historical events, and the state of firearms technology at the time. If weaponry had advanced beyond the muzzleloader stage to what became available much later, say, during our American Civil War, it would have been much more difficult to arm the citizen militia to offer resistance to the professional British Army. It is one reason the 2nd amendment exists, to offer protections to the private individual and the collective citizenry against any tyrannical government, which might seek to control ammunition and gun-powder. Melting down pewter candle-sticks took care of the ammunition problem, and colonial tradesmen knew how to make and repair guns. A present day visit to Colonial Williamsburg, and nearby settlements in Virginia tells that story very well. It also explains our country's western expansion, the sad story of the American Indian's fate (before casinos), and our military superiority which has made America a political and cultural powerhouse on the world stage. If not for staying ahead with technology, America cedes our ability to lead, so there is a political element as well. All because of fate and a muzzleloader, and a self-interest in freedom.
