Sid Hartman: Worst Vikings team ever? It has to be 1984

The Les Steckel-led team not only lost regularly, but it lost big regularly.

I would say Sunday is our best shot to at least "tie" worst team from'84. If we lose to Atlanta, the remaining schedule will have Minnesota looking like a 2 win team...maybe Washington...

I remember the 1984 team and the many blow outs. I agree that this is a better team even if we don't win another game. At this stage of the season I am all for not winning, so we can get the best draft choice possible. I still pull for them to win, but I don't feel bad if we lose.

Jury is still out Sid!!!! There is plenty of time left in the season for this Viking team to prove you wrong! Plus, what is the Viking all time record with a coach named Les?

Also, the wheels didn't come off until the Nov. 11th game against the Packers that year...sound familiar?

Steckel lost most of his players' support in training camp. His ridiculous Iron-man competition resulted in a couple of nagging injuries that hurt the team all season long. He was a great assistant coach, but a lousy head coach. Some types of coaches are not cut out to be head coaches (Childress, Brewster).

hmmmm, 1984.....the NEW stadium (new at that time) was only TWO YEARS OLD!!!

Sid, Mike Lynn made way more bad decisions than good ones. He moved the Vikings into that dump known as the Metrodome. That took away a great competetive advantage we had. He wrecked our 1987 team by trading all those players and draft picks for Herscel Walker. Probably the stupidist move ever in Vikings history-of which there have been many. Finally,. he sold his interest to Roger Headrick. Headrick left his mark by relating poorly to his players. And, as I remember, few wanted to play for him. And of course, Lynn hired Les Steckel. No Sid, Mike Lynn was a loser. He did far more harm to the Minnesota Vikings franchise than he ever did good. Max Winter was a great owner. His only mistake was he hired Mike Lynn in the first place. If you want to give Mike Lynn credit for anything: Mike Lynn turned a championship caliber football team that consistently won their division, won the NFC, and went to Super Bowls-to a mediocre football team that has never again appeared in a Super Bowl. The Vikings need to keep the door locked for guys like Mike Lynn and his ilk.

For this team to be compared to the worst team in Viking history speaks volumes about the fact that Frazier is obviously in over his head! It isn't just a matter of a couple of lucky plays that if turned would've allowed the Vikings to pull out wins...They've been out-matched, out-coached, out-talented in every single game this year! Oh yea, if the Panthers had a better FG kicker they would have won in OT!

Have to agree that Lynn was a cancer -- although not on the dome -- that was Mad Max's idea. But, he was the one that brought in Tark -- who could generate a pretty good offense almost singlehandedly. Unfortunately, he wasn't the kind of guy that you could build a scary SB offense around. So, I mark him down on that one. As for Walker -- well, Mike was the best thing that ever happened to Dallas. BTW, Mike didn't bring Bud back -- Max begged for his return. At the press conference, Bud barely acknowledged Mike. You may recall that Bud actually resigned -- he knew what was coming. Then, I think that he went along with the Steckel deal, knowing that Les would fall on his butt, and he could get the job for Burnsie. Bud had a lot of moves.

This team has a bit more talent than the 1984 team. So as such, they are the worst team from a performance perspective. This is all on Leslie Frazier and Rick Spielman.
