With former Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit officially signed to a one-year, $3 million deal, the question for the Twins becomes: How will they use him?

real possibility of keeping capps my butt the only real possibility ryan should think about is getting rid of butera and getting some pitching but then i dont know if thats a possibillty or i am dreaming why would you waste a roster spot with 3 catchers?

".....he just doesn't have the experience." i think that could be said about every single closer at one time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't last year the first year Perkins was a reliever full-time? It may be less a situational thing, and more a question of can he pitch 3-5 times a week every week. Maybe Ryan just wants to make sure Perkins has fully converted from "every five days pitching" to "ready every day, warmed up in 10 minutes".

Wow...they make it sound like being a closer is right up there with being a brain surgeon or a rocket scientist. How tough can it really be to come in every three days or so and throw 15-20 pitches at the most. Let Perkins close and spend some money on starting pitching...that's where the problem is. Also, the thought of carrying Butera as a third catcher is the most ridiculous idea ever. Why did you spend the money on Doumit to catch if you feel the need to hang on to Butera as well? Makes no sense at all. I thought the idea was to turn this team around??

Gardy needs to watch how he uses Doumit. The guy has spent a lot of time on the disabled list. And we don't want that. I like the idea of a revolving door for the DH spot. Also,. why not give Doumit more reps at 1st base in preseason to at least give him more confidence-just in case. Doumit's going to be fun to watch. As far as Butera is concerned, he still has an important role on this club. He'll be in the bullpen warming up pitchers and relaying important information to Rick Anderson; he can be a great late-inning defensive replacement; and, he won't be getting the plate appearances he got in 2011. So his offensive numbers, albeit reduced, should improve. The idea is Mauer and Doumit stay healthy so Butera doesn't get exposed.

Hopefully Butera doesn't make the roster. Rochester OK. Or, comes in with the closers in the 8th or 9th innings. Ideally no at bats for the year... Other than at Rochester!

There are other options for the Twins other than just resigning Matt Caspps. There's the free-agent pool, with Broxton, Dotel, Wuertz, K-Rod, etc... and trade possibilities as well. The Twins should also look at the current crop of free-agent starters and middle relievers to see if one of them could become an everyday closer. As far as Perkins is concerned, I can understand why the Twins would want to keep him in his set-up role. But it would be nice if they discussed the matter with Glenn before burying it. Jason Isringhausen is available too.

It would be nice if we had some starters that could go 7 innings. I don't think closer on this team will be much of an issue.
