A battle builds over breakfast

Under the threat of federal action, everything about kids' food, from cereal sugar levels to mascots to TV ads, is under scrutiny.

Read the story: the reason kids are getting fatter is not the cereal, it's the time they are spending plopped in front of the TV or a computer. That's also where they are seeing the advertising. Cut out the TV, they won't see commercials, and we will have skinny in-shape kids running around again.

Generally I am against more and more government regulation. Heck, some of these people would just as soon outlaw candy, period. But the marketing troubles me. On a personal level, how do the employees involved in marketing and advertising junk food to kids sleep at night?

Once again the government feels compelled to limit choice, and force it's will rather than let the citizens be accountable. Guess what, if you eat a cereal or breakfast high in sugar, put the sugar and calories to use in playing outside, playing sports, or do something that is going to burn the energy - not sitting in front of a TV or computer. Again, the actions taken by consumers are what the real issue is, as evident by generations of kids that had no issues burning those calories off in the past, as opposed to current generations that are compelled to waste the energy. But, hey, whatever. The same people complaining about child obesity, are the same people that are planting kids in front of TVs and not getting out to be active with them, so you get what you get in this case.

DON'T YOU ALL enjoy more Government regulation .... not to mention central planning?...who would be stupid enough to even try and start a small business today? if you worked 16 hour days, actually hired people, and made a furtune then Obama would say you are a bad and evil person. sad really.

I've never seen a 10-year-old buy a box of cereal. Parents need to parent. Even sugary cereal like Cinnimon Toast Crunch doesn't have as much sugar as the other sources kids are exposed to (energy drinks, pop, snacks, etc). You know there is a parenting problem when "fruit snacks" a.k.a. Gummy Bears are being used a replacement for an apple (fruit juice concentrate = sugar).

We don't need federal regulation of the cereal industry. We need parents to be parents and quit feeding their kids junk even if their kids don't like it. Unfortunately,todays parents would rather be friends with their kids instead of parents. They need to learn how to say "no" to their kids. Plain and simple.

Just turn the TV off. We don't have to watch it. When you turn it off, good things happen! Try it and see.

If parents would start driving past the drive throughs and feed their kids something other than fatty burgers, greasy tacos, and grease soaked chicken, maybe their kids wouldn't be so damn fat. While they're at it, send the kids outside to play with their friends once in a while. Mankind managed to survive countless millennia without TV and video games. Your kids can survive a few hours a night.

Give me a break!!!! I am the one buying the food for my kids, theerefore, the government has NO right to interfere with that. I am all for food being safe, but it's the parents responsibility to read labels and the food they think is best for their kids

We are one of the few nations who would view having an excess of food as being "a growing national epidemic." The 99% are whining about something that 98% of the rest of us could care less about while in the meantime we've gotten to the point where our kids have so much food it's an epidemic. Guess what America? Africa, South America, Central America, and most of Asia would envy an epidemic like this. Like it or not, from the perspective of the rest of the world, YOU are the 1%!
