If blame it to be placed, the NWS is in part culpable. As I recall, there was rain predicted many times throughout the course of the fire, right from the start. The rain didn't happen, the fire flourished. The NWS really needs to get back to science and stop relying on computer "models".

"Four others beached their canoes on an island and took cover under life-saving gear..." Why didn't they just paddle their canoes out into the middle of the lake and away from the fire, instead of deploying their life-saving gear on a burning island?

I hope this doesnt turn into a witch-hunt. However, like any good business - I hope this event is well documented and any shortcomings are called out in detail. If the current personnel can lay out a good solution for the issues found - keep them and move forward. If they are not VERY PROACTIVE in solving the issues (there were many), a new team/management should be brought in.

It isn't a house. Fire is a natural process of nature. It is hard to see from the short lifespan of a human but in the life of a forest it is just a stage that actually improves the place. If we don't interfere, occasional small fires prevent the big ones like this. In time, this will be the best part of that part of the area. We can't limit ourselves to thinking of this as some kind of retirement account for us. It is a retirement account for our great grandchildren, and a very good one at that.

We have all learned to expect the worst from goverment. This is no suprise. When you work in an enviroment where you are rewarded by doing the least with the most (goverment) what else can you expect

The Forest Service is not "a good business". It's a bungled government bureaucracy.

I would have put that fire out the very first day without question; now that I now how everything worked out.
