Nice to see all of the hard work he put in pay off. From my vantage point in Section 18 he looks to be the most improved player on the team this year. Best of luck to him the rest of the way!

Guentzel effect: Maybe the coaching staff last year didn't know their personnel well enough to recognize they had a very good defensemen and not a forward on the team! It seems Nate would have had a good freshmen year if Mike Guentzel was his coach. It is nice to hear there is at least one coach on the staff that holds players accoutable! Lucia is known for not holding his NHL draft picks accoutable but according to the players Mike Guentzel isn't and maybe that is why they are off to a solid start. Schmidt calls Guentzel, who works with the blue-line corps, a high-energy, in-your-face coach. "If you make a mistake, you are going to hear about it for a couple minutes to come," Schmidt said. "He holds everybody accountable, at least our defensemen.". Best part about the quote, at least our defensemen! Indicating that maybe Lucia doesn't hold his forwards accountable. Guentzel sounds like he is coaching and that seems to be a refreshingly new concept at the UofM. Bringing Guentzel back might be the only smart move Maturi made during the last five years, it seems Guentzel might be the key to future and past successes of the program and maybe the secret is out now - let's offer him a 7 year contract before Mankato steals him away next year

Guentzel will not be going any place. He was brought in to be the next head coach and not by Maturi, but the alumni. If Lucia didn't bring him back he was gone! Hopefully Lucia will become the B10 commissioner.

gopherfan you make good points but do need you to reprint the article for us. Lucia is still the best man for the job. Knowhere in the article does it say that Lucia doen't hold his players accountable. So why assume he doesn't?

If Schmidt were in the games instead of Wehrs against Alaska, the Gophers would have been in the NCAA tourney.

mulefarm where did you get your information that Lucia would be gone? I never heard that before. Is that your own opinion or is it fact? If it's fact give more details.

Their playing pretty well and working hard overall. There are manu reasons why - no need to go looking for clouds around what so far has been a good start! Go Gophers!
