Failures in football -- the university's most visible sport -- cry out for new, big-picture Gophers leadership.

I guess I can wait that long for the "U" to dump Maturi. Being a Gopher fan, I've certainly learned patience. As much as I wish it was sooner, it's way more important to get the best possible replacement for Maturi than to get rid of him as fast as possible. A good candidate may be more willing to take the job if the last guy was non-tendered rather than fired. As much as I've heard the "Fire Maturi" stuff, I haven't heard anything about who would be a good replacement besides just about anybody. Are highly qualified candidates willing to take this job? Are we willing to pay a highly talented A.D.? Please Mr. Kaler, hire a great A.D. I'm willing to give you time, just make sure you get it right.

He may be a nice man with great morals but he has been very mild and shown very light leadership skills... too long to list here. BTW - In this picture he looks a bit like Moammar Gadhafi. Time to change another so-called "leader."

Maturi done, no brainer. But Jerry Kill really worries me. He basically wants us to pay him for 4 years before we evaluate him. How about we take 4 years before we pay him. This guy actually has his staff spend time monitoring who goes to class. I guess that explains the reason the gameplan stinks every week. THERE IS NO GAMEPLAN. Instead of coaching or viewing film, they are playing the part of hall monitor. Kill better show some pretty nice improvement next year or the new Athletic Director could have a big decision to make on how long Kill is going to last. One this is for sure, you can evaluate his recruits compared to others. If he brings in top talent next year, as good or better on paper compared to Wisconsin and other big ten teams, this is a good start. But if his recruiting class is ranked near the bottom, we can't put lipstick on a pig and Kill must be shown the door.

Not that it affects team performance ... however, it certainly affects public perception. Change the school's nickname. Somehow the name of a rodent just doesn't elicit respect from an opponent.

Don't just not renew his contract, FIRE HIM NOW!!! The U needs to make a statement that they are going to take this seriously.

As much as I LOVE the University of Minnesota, I have always hated the nickname. Over the years, I have shared that I am a "Golden Gopher" grad and always received many chuckles from others. Even my wife cannot understand why such a nickikname. The University of Minnesota should adopt: North Stars; Wolves; Fighting Muskies or Walleyes (just kidding); Vikings; Icemen; Blizzards; Tornadoes; or some other name ... but NOT the Golden Gophers!

I know nothing of Charlie Strong or Craig Bohl-two of the coaches Maturi could have chosen. Then there's Brewster and Kiffin? A U of M professor should have been consulted on the probabilities and statistics of making a bad choice out of that quartet! Kiffin is nothing more than a 'carpet bagger' coach he wouldn't have stayed ... just ask Tennessee or anywhere else he was; asked kids and fans to buy in and then left flat. As for Brewster? He was the Don Quixote of college football coaches. Simply delusional.

Mature must not come back. He is out of his league. Getting rid of Mason was fine. He was an okay coach but not good enough to put up with hi smugness. Brewster was a film flam man who should be selling shoes in the mall with Al Bundy. Jerry Kill is the right man for the job. Four years for results is a long time. I think we will see improvement from him much sooner than that. Changing the ridiculous Gopher name should have happened a long time ago. They are food for all the other animals in the Big Ten.

HOW DO YOU BECOME the worst football in the entire country in having people like Maturi in charge. I don't think anyone even cares anymore...when I watch Gopher football, like tomorrow, i pull for the other team and just laugh.

Great article, Chip. Can't add anymore than that.
