Great article, Russ-- but you have the sources to ask the league to comment, and I'd have like to hear what they said about Clutter's real-world observation. All right-minded folk appreciate the league's intent here (no doubt including Clutter), but the law of "unintended consequences" must always be respected and addressed.

Way doesn't the NHL take fighting out of the game and make every team have 5 girls on the team and wear full cages! The league is going down hill fast! Quit changing the game!!!!!!

Whatever clutterbuck is so overrated its silly. He has nominal talent. Trade him now while his stock is still high. Get someone to give us someone who is just as physical but can score more and not shoot the puck over the net 10 times a night.

Tell Clutterbuck to learn to play all facets of the game and he won't have a problem. Instead of running around the ice hitting people, try working on hitting the net. Can this guy even hit the goalie with a shot? Every shot he takes misses the goal by 4 feet.

Guys like Cal and Avery are what's wrong with NHL they take cheap shots and never have to drop the gloves! Get rid of the instigator penalty and let the players police the game !! Ex. Asham vs. Beagle at least beagle dropped his gloves, CC would have talked abunch of crap while he skated off the ice!! I am a Wild fan but # 22 is a joke!!

Let's see, 19 goals last year. Yup, I think he hits the net on occasion. And comparing Clutterbuck to Avery is about as absurd as online newspaper aricle comments get.

He won't score 15 this year.

CC got the goals because he was playing on a bad team getting way to much ice time. He's a 4 th liner! And a side show attraction for people that know absolutely nothing about the game and it's history!

Up until this year, I was a big fan of CC but his game seems to have slipped somewhat. He now has a high turnover rate in the offensive zone and really isn't creating many scoring chances. I know its early, but he needs to step it up.

This is the most absurd comments section I've seen. Trade Clutterbuck after four games this year because he isn't playing well? Let's trade Koivu too, he's not scoring! As for the players policing themselves that @sageak is calling for...I'm glad you picked one of the most classless incidents this season as your example for players policing themselves. Even Asham said it was classless...
