Hawaii changed the name of Colombus Day? Do they also call Independence Day the "Celebration of the Country that Invaded Our Soverign Kingdom Day"?

Wow, Mr Strickler, way to dig deep into the unspeakable evil that was Chris Columbus. The fact that we still have a holiday to honor such a despicable human being at all is indefensible. http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/10/08/4398

It is not "PC" to celebrate this day any more.

I for one am not offended by Columbus. What I remember being taught in school was nothing bad. Only recently have the teachers started telling my children that ole Christopher was bad. In the past twenty some years, he went from being the Guy that found North America to a slave trader, rapist, and gold pillager. Revisionists are some pretty sick and twisted people. What was wrong with the way we were taught?

Columbus Day may have "fallen off the map" here, but spend the day in Boston, NYC, or Philadelphia you will find that is not the case. In may locations it is observed as less a day of celebrating discovery, and more as a celebration of Italian-American culture, history and tradition.

I guess my lifelong dream of finally getting paid to sit at home on Columbus day is coming to an end. Sigh. At least I can feel good about my tax dollars going to pay for Minneapolis city employees to enjoy it for me. Again.

Minneapolis, an apparent holdout, will close its city offices. Suprised?

Let's get real. Since the government went over to "observing" holidays only Mondays so employees could have three day weekends, on Christmas, Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving and Labor Day are widely observed. Others are just excuses to close government offices and banks. What malls close for Presidents' Day, Veteran's Day, MLK day, Columbus Day etc. Answer: None. Ask a lot of young people whose birthdays are celebrated on Presidents' Day, for example, and they won't have a clue. Oh, in the mail yesterday I got flyer from JC Penney for a Columbus Day sale. That's the way most American's celebrate holidays - a trip to the mall.
