Wild checks out in second period

The Wild's ghastly second periods under former coach Todd Richards were renowned, but Thursday's middle frame was poor even by last year's standards.

Just because he is a fan favorite doesn't mean he gets a free pass. Go ahead and say you don't like this comment. I really don't care. But the way CC plays is very borderline, and there may possibly come a time when he makes a check and someone gets hurt. Whether intentional or not. And he may be suspended. He's the type of player that if he's on your team, you love him, if he's not you hate him. Personally, I believe he doesn't deserve the boos for that style of play. What he definitely deserves boos for is his offense. Russo and most others on here say he's a 20-25 goal scorer. Well, that means at least a goal every 4 games. He hasn't done squat this preseason, and he didn't do squat most of the second half of the season. And that includes giving him a bit of a break for his neck/concussion/whatever that injury was.

mgalaforet, if you don't realize what Cal brings to the Wild please take any money you'd spend on them this year and put it in my checking account.

The reason Clutter doesn't score more is he's made his mark by being the "hits" leader, but I believe he could score 25 goals or even more. The guys got a good quick shot and goes hard to the net but when, either because of coaching influence or line assignment,he spends the vast majority of his time head hunting it's tough to score. I'd like to see Brodzi on the second line and Cullen moved to the third, and then have Powe assume the agitator role while Clutter is instructed to be more offensive. I think CC has more talent than most NHL agitators and we can use every bit we have.

When CC plays like NYR's Callahan, or LAK's Brown, then I will be the first to applaud CC. He may have that potential, but he needs to show it. Until then, a third-liner who contributes nothing offensively on a consistent basis and leads the league in the useless statistic of hits, is just a side-show act for MN fans who love the concept of "old-time hockey." BTW, in case you haven't noticed, old-time hockey went by the wayside in the 1990's.

@mgalaforet- he has shown it, if you would have been watching the games last year you would have seen it. Your comments show me that you are a very casual fan at best.

mgalaforet as you & I both know because we've been commenting on this page for years, that people don't like when you critize a fan favorite. I fully agree with your take on CC. I said it since he joined the Wild. webspectre02 mgalaforet is not a casual fan. If you follow along daily you'll see that mgalaforet, jakemano, uffda, armymom1, goaliegirl33, and myself played the game understand the game & talk above most people on this site writers included. If I forgot anybody that posts daily it wasn't intentional. webspectre02 during the season one of us daily, will post a question to the others and we have a great round table discussions feel free to join in but we are not casual fans and or season ticket holders who just show up to drink $10 beers and scream because there was a fight. We watch the game and appreciate great play and we also call out players who aren't living up to their contracts.

Check out how many goals CC has scored the last 20 games, when he is supposed to be needed, during the past two seasons. One each year! And two years ago that one goal bounced off of him. Borrowing from the title of the column, CC's checks-out the second half of the season! Because he is a fan favorite, people just refuse to accept reality. My last post mentioned the word consistency when it comes to CC. I like Russo okay, but wish he would call-out fan favorites when they need to be called-out. He has no problem calling-out the non-fan favorites. I just do what I wish he would do.
