I supported light rail but it never occurred to me that the Metro Council would make such a hash of things. At the very minimum there should be online maps updated daily that CLEARLY show how traffic is moving through key intersections. I believe the construction crews are responsible for the signage, but signs are often confusing and many intersections have all but been shut down by a failure to post NO LEFT TURN signs. There's still plenty of time to salvage something from this mess, but does anyone in charge really care? I don't think so.
This is a travesty. They should have an assistance program for these business at risk of closing. The end result will be that smaller businesses, mom-and-pop places, will be most likely to close. Then bigger businesses, chains, corporate stores, etc. will come in and take over their spots. This will be a big factor in the transformation of the decline of small business in St. Paul. This is a death sentence for small business along the Corridor. It's irresponsible and unwise.

jackstpaul3, the article mentioned the assistance available to these folks....maybe re-read the article to ensure your outrage is wellplaced. We all feel pain from road construction. I live near the cross town in minneapolis and for three years, i would have to learn a new route to get to my house approx every six weeks because they'd take out another bridge, close another avenue or whatever.
People always need something to whine about....if these businesses are in demand and have loyal customers, they will survive....the wining ones probably have issues with their business model and would have probably gone bankrupt regardless of the light rail project in front of their stores.

Most of the businesses along University Ave. are located nowhere near stations, and will likely never see any benefit from this. They will however be impacted by construction. The losses they suffer cannot be attributed to anything but this project. Nothing else has changed. There is nothing wrong with the cities offering bridge financing to the impacted businesses, especially since they are the ones who caused this harm by supporting this project. The alternative is that the affected businesses might sue for damages, which will end up being more costly for all involved.
University Ave recieved the death penalty when light rail moved in. These business' will never return. They will be replaced with non-profits that are supported by government. And the new apartmentments will also be subsidized by our government. Two types of people ride public transportation, poor people and people who are too cheap to drive. Neither will bring prosperity back to the mid-way.
The Met Council and your city leaders are fools. This should have been monorail or L trains like in Chicago or New York City.
They chased 100s away from the former Porky's and business is off 40% and they think it will come back???
We have learned to adapt to the construction and work within it, verses complaining and thinking something will change because of our whining.
We have made attempts to see "past LRT construction." Our perserverance and hard work has actually INCREASED business. We have higher occupancy that before LRT construction.
It is much easier to try and work with the construction than try to change it. Come November we will be back to normal 2-lanes each way.
I think I'll go down to University for diner tomorrow.
Wait until Ramsey County passes the .5% sales tax to pay for the Vikings stadium. That will chase more customers away.
