In the end, decision on when to change oil is up to you

The dealer advises oil changes when we reach 20 percent of oil life remaining, but waiting 11,250 to 14,100 miles between oil changes raises some worries.

Do you happen to have a leftover half-can of Sea Foam Trans-Tune after reading this week's column? If so, you've come to the right place because it's time for SEAFOAM KITCHEN. This week's recipe is for Frothy Seafoam Frappe! You will need: 1 cup espresso or strong coffee (let cool); 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup; 2 teaspoons crème de cacao; 1/2 teaspoon crème de menthe; 1 cup milk; 6 cups crushed ice. This will serve two people. Pour all of your ingredients into a blender and blend on high until the ice is thoroughly crushed. Divide between two chilled glasses. Remember not to add any Sea Foam Trans-Tune to your smoothie. It won't taste good, and the smoothie doesn't have any worn seals and components or any other stuff like that anyway. Cheers! That's it for this week. Thanks for reading.

Now that the recipe is taken care of I do have a few questions. Just which transmission problem will the Sea Foam solve? High operating temperatures? I don't see how. Worn seals and components in the valve body? I don't understand how the Sea Foam will "unwear" them. Cumulative wear and tear? Ditto. If adding the Sea Foam may "improve transmission performance measurably," how should that be measured? I think the owner should have the transmission scanned for fault codes before adding stuff to it. I prefer transmission fluid. Here's a thought: maybe the leftover half-can will help the Acura owner with the skunk odor problem.

Rather than guessing at 4000 miles, why not do an oil analysis every 2500 miles or so until the oil reaches the end of it's life and write about it? I bet the Strib would even spring for it.
