The two are on friendly terms, and both of them will be inside TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

I hope Mason's losing attitude doesn't rub off. Reading some of those quotes made me ill. If the attitude is their that once in awhile we will "get lucky" and have a good recruiting class is there, we can look forward to more terrible results for Gopher football. Recruiting is work, just like coaching. If you take the attitude that you cannot attract top talent, you won't attract top talent. Without top talen, you don't win. Period. Please, please don't listent to a guy who couldn't even finish 3rd in his own conference once in a ten year tenure.

I like Jerry Kill and I will always be a fan of Glen Mason as he brought respectability back to football at this school beating major teams such as Ohio State, Michigan and winning some pretty good bowl games. I still struggle with how coach Mason lost his team during that final bowl game... It's still hard to believe that he could some how get our players back on track... Anyways, Coach Mason is the best football coach the Gophers have had in decade. Under Mason, we won a lot of football games that the Gophers normally would not have won. And oh boy how I miss Mason's running game, it was awesome with Marony and Barber. Also, if it were not for Coach Mason, I doubt we would have TCF Bank Stadium, the man deserves a lot more credit than people seem to want to give him. Mason might rub some people the wrong way, but he doesn't with me, I never got tired of the winning, Mason made Gopher football fun again.

I think the comments regarding the difficulty involved in recruiting top high school football stars is quite accurate. College football at the U of M competes with the Vikings when sports dollars are spent. The climate in Minnesota is a drawback to recruiting. I think the U of M is a good school academically; however, is not a great school. (eg. Northwestern or Stanford.) Then, too, they make the kids go to class at the U of M, and kids probably have to buy their own cars.

Northstars91, I really miss that running game too. No matter how bad the defense was they always had a chance to win.

The problem with Mason was the huge disconnect between the salary he made and the empty seats in the Metrodome. He was making big bucks and getting a won-loss record playing patsies that nobody wanted to see. I agree with the observation that it all went down hill when he didn't get the Ohio State job but the hill wasn't all that high.

Mason was (is) a good coach and did a lot for the program. I think he undermined his support by not definitively saying he wasn't looking for another job. Minnesotans are basically insecure and without him saying "I love it here and would never leave" people just kept spreading tumors that he was looking elsewhere. Even with the 5 yr extension people still didn't trust him.

Mason said. "You're going to have to take kids and develop them into a team. Some people win because they just have superior talent. That's not going to happen here. Every once in a while you may get lucky and have a great recruiting class." Chip, how did Mason reply to the obvious follow-up question: Why is it difficult to recruit superior talent to UM?

Mason should have never been let go. Huge, Huge mistake on Maturi. In fact fire Maturi!

Kill must have picked up a few tips on the defense from Mason.
