MarQueis Gray is still the Gophers' starter, but freshman Max Shortell's first action was inspiring.

Gray, the freshman is hungry.

OH, and Marquis.... Dont forget the hydration, even if the coaches do. Pregame IV anyone?

That was the first time Ive seen either Gray or Shortell at QB. But I like Shortell's pocket presence way better, he can stand tall and look down field, and the ball comes out of his hand much better than it does for Marquis. He's more of a natural QB. I know it msy be too soon to make the move, but I think I'd rather see these guys on the field together at the same time for the next 2 years, with Marquis as more of a slot back like Percy Harvin. Shortell just throws a nice ball and really can survey the field.

SHORTELL THE ANSWER - I give props to Marquis and his effort, but this offense is almost one-dimensional with MG at QB. Defenses can key on him all year. With Shortell on the field, you are able to utilize our talented RBs more effectively, do more play action AND have MG paired with McKnight at receiver. More weapons, much better passing game, brighter future. Why would MG want to be QB anyway? If it's a pride/leadership thing, then GET OVER IT. MG has a bright future in the NFL as a WR and NO future as a QB.

As many have poinedt out for the past two years, including me, Gray does not have the necessary skills and poise to play QB at the D-1 level as was clearly pointed out by the play of Shortrell in his first college football game let alone against fairly good but not great opposition. Gray has shown great ability to catch and then run with the ball and can be a tremendous asset for the Gophers in that regard. Those who thought that Gray should have been playing the past two years instead of Weber could see on Saturday when Shortrell came in why Brewster played Weber rather than Gray during that time. Shortrell has the potential to be a great QB for the Gophers over time, certainly more than Gray will ever be. On the other hand, Shortrell is just a freshman and will likely be up and down all year as he adjusts to college ball. The folks who have insisted that Gray is a good QB should now be willingly eating crow after the USC game. On the other hand, Gray can be a great asset for the team but just not at the starting QB position. Coach Kill had to start Gray, of course, and give him every chance to succeed. On the other hand, given that they planned to play Shortrell during the game anyway, that clearly meant that the coaches were keeping their QB options open and were not yet convinced that Gray could get the job done at that position.

What Shortell achieved in his maiden voyage is what a #2 QB is supposed to do. Step in when given the opportunity and get the job done.

Max Shortell is the better QB and should be the starter. MG was really hard to watch, like T-Jack. Hopefully coach Kill makes the right decision here.

Did people really think Gray was going to look like he'd been playing QB for the last 4 years instead of sitting? With the headsets not working it's clear why he looked so much better in the second half than the first. The good news here is that Kill is a smart coach that will make the right call. I just hope the grump MN fans don't boo the kid before he ever throws a pass at the bank.

The headset communication mixup in the first half was a huge factor in MG's first half performance, don't forget that. I'm sure coach Kill and his staff will give MG every chance to succeed and if he is not getting the job done at QB he will be used at another position on the field. He is a great football player however, we may find out he is not a great QB!
