The Vikings have yet to declare him the starter over Tyrell Johnson, but his preseason play has been sure and decisive.

Maybe he can, you know, intercept a football?

Lets all be honest here, Tyrell Johnson is not even the teams 2nd best safety. In fact, I don't think he should have made the final roster. He has done nothing since we drafted him, and surely not even close to enough to consider him a starter! He is constantly late to the ball weather they are running or passing. And as far as catching a football? My 15 year old nephew has better hands than him. No way does a high caliber safety constantly have the ball hit him in the hands and fall to the ground! It bothers me that we keep this guy when he wouldn't even make a roster on most NFL teams! Use a roster spot for someone who PRODUCES instead of the "Troy Williamson" of Defensive backs. Enough already Frazier!

Couldn't agree with Toby more. I'll never forget Johnson dropped that gift INT from Brees at midfield in overtime in the 2009 NFC title game. He should have never been allowed on the flight home. This guy has nice athletic tools, but his see to do and lack of field awareness leaves a ton to be desired given he's the last line of defense. I think he's better closer to the line of scrimmage rather than be asked to patrol the deep zones behind the corners. And to think we could have had Desean Jackson instead of this bum in the 2008 draft, who was picked six picks after Johnson.

Tobyg32 I agree with everything u said u seem like u know what ur talking about so for the love of god justify the vikings picking Toby gerhart in the second round! For a big he constantly get stuffed on 3 and short so really wat is he good for? I don't mean to come off as negative or racist cause he's white but am just sayin!! I think there were some talented players available and we could have filled some needs but that bonehead childress went ahead and drafted a white running back in the second round when we have the running back position pretty much solidifyed with perhabs the most physically gifted running back ever!!!!that just confuses me so much

Sanford can tackle, which is rare these days. Start him.

The Vikings haven't been very good in the draft with their high round picks except for two remarkable players in Harvin and AD. The O-line is horrible, no safeties and thin at LB yet they draft a QB knowing full well that McNabb was coming before the draft took place. I like Ponder a lot but he was drafted too high and was not a glaring need when you have a starter in McNabb and a young guy with promise in Webb. Regardless of how you think of Ponder, if he doesn't start this year or beat out the 199th pick at some point, it will have been a foolish pick. The #12th pick in the draft should be playing on Sundays not holding a clipboard as the 3rd string QB... Picking Troy Williamson and Erasmus James over Aaron Rogers smooth.

Sanford reminds me a lot of a pretty good SS who use to play for the Vikes- #24 Robert Griffith. Physical, not afraid to get in the mix in run support, plays bigger than his listed size, and zips to the football with little regard for his well being, and making ball carriers pay. Coaches talk a lot about seeing a player "flash" or "show up" on film and Sanford does just that. One of the few bright spots in the secondary besides Winfield.

For the guy who says he likes Ponder a lot "but", we did not have McNabb when they drafted Ponder! They drafted Ponder because he has skills, he was also the most intelligent football player on and off the field, in the entire draft. This young man can indeed become the complete quarterback for the Vikings to grow with. Had the offseason not been cancelled, it is doubtful the we would have aquaired McNabb. Their plan was to get him ready to start game one...but when that was not possible, they grabbed McNabb to fill in till Ponder is ready. He will start before the season is over. This young man is as smart or smarter the Peyton Mannin on and certainly off the field. It does not get better than that.

av_vaj so true!!! i loved Robert Griffith, what a hammer. that guy was great at stuffing the run, plus was decent at covering too. Sanford has waaaay more power and tuffness the TJ. its no question who should start. aside from winfield our secondary has lacked tuffness for a while. Sanford is a stick and is hungry too!!

They should have signed Merriweather, an All Pro safety and not let da Bears get him. There is no commitment to winning with the way they shaped the roster. I agree that the OL, secondary and receivers are inadequate. McNabb may be hurt in the first game and then we'll really be in trouble. I don't expect this team to win more than 5 games with this shaky roster.
