Gophers strive to be basic, yet inventive

Labeling the Gophers offense is futile. The coaches concentrate on doing a few things right, but compile game plans with imagination.

I watched Smith Center crush an opponent in the Kansas HS playoffs three years ago during their 79-game winning streak. They ran two plays -- triple option right and triple option left. They never huddled. Obviously too simple for college ball, but the point is that if you execute flawlessly, you don't need a thousand sets and plays. And you can become flawless if you keep it as simple as possible.

This is going to be a fun team to watch. They might not make it to the Rose Bowl THIS YEAR but they will be fun to watch. And they'll be better than most people think they will be. I think the U better start thinking about ways to keep Kill and his coaches for the long term. Go Gophers!

Some old coach called Lombardi once said [best as I can remember] "We know what we will run, they know what we will run, and we know they know what we will run. It doesn't matter what the hell they know if we execute better than they do. It's all about execution." And he did OK doing that in the pros.
