This list is so incomplete it's rediculous. Many others have equally deficient environments. My neighbor died in St. Olafs on Fremont north. When I went to visit, there was one RN for TWO floors of patients. My friend had no assistance, no urine bottle and the RN refused to leave the desk because "I'm the only one here." While there are caring individuals in the profession, the business of nursing homes is all about the bottom line, and feeding ownerships upscale lifestyles. The industry is an abomination, but a great place to park intrusive loved ones. TV and a pill anyone?
From what I have seen of these places, most would be better off dead than in one of these places. There are a few, very few that provide a decent quality of care for some but not even all residents. This industry is in dire need of reform and the politicians do nothing whatsoever to ensure excellent, quality care is the standard. Such care is attainable an should be a right.
This report does nothing but show the ignorance of the reporter that wrote this,all Nursing Home are required to report abuse or instances of neglect..It is called self reporting, so when you see that a person that worked for a home, and it was reported means the home was doing it's job, and the person was fired or diciplined.
It is the non reporting that should scare people.
also every nursing home get's Tags, everything from a bad med pass, or a document not being made.
The Nursing Home Business is the most regulated operation out there, State and Federal inspections.
All Nursing Homes are being paid for resident cares by State and Federal dollars.
And a nursing Home only want to keep it's head above water, that is why most are faith based and Non profit, Luck to break even.
The people At burger King sometimes make more money then someone taking care of your loved one at a care center....that is how much the state cares about the elderly.
Have you ever seen anyone show the compassion and caring these Homes give? the workers underpaid that wash and bath, change there cloths, wipe there faces, While no getting vistors from family and old friends...Peope need to wake up and care for the elderly, and quit bashing the Nursing Homes.
This article is misleading. A deficiency can be very serious, or something minor. I know a facility that got a "serious" deficiency for serving eggs over easy. Also, the average number of deficiencies per facility in MN is 11.6 so I think it's more important to know WHAT the deficiency is, rather than how MANY.
How about a list of the long-term care facilities with the highest ratings and least amount of deficiences. Maybe some interviews with nursing home residents and family members who are pleased with their experiences?
Or do positive stories not sell in the news world?
As someone who has worked in long-term care for 7 years, it's extremely disheartening to only see negative reporting in the media. I'm not ignorant of the fact that there are facilities and workers that are substandard, but there are so many more of us that are competent, caring, and give so much of ourselves to keep our residents happy, safe, and well-cared for.
Wow. I love that this reporter is making these claims based on OUTDATED health department surveys. I am an employee at Robbinsdale, and all of the complaints mentioned here occurred in 2009 and since the things mentioned here occurred several things have happened: 1. New administration including a new DON 2.An almost completely new nursing staff on the the TCU unit and 3. MOST IMPORTANTLY- a new survey from the health department this year which we passed with flying colors- look it up! It is public information! How can this reporter claim this is the most current available when the info being used is from 2009????????? That's pretty shoddy reporting. This a huge slap in the face to all of us who work at Robbinsdale and work our butts off.
As a past employee of several nursing homes I would advise looking on evaluation sites other than the standard ones. Google helps locate other places that are public information sites so you don't pay for access. It is good to get more than one view of the care given in a nursing home. One I worked in which had a good reputation from years ago has really been sliding. A hint I can give to those evaluating a nursing home is pay attention to how much money is put into interior decoration and accessories. Emphasis is often placed on appearance rather than on taking care of infrastructure. The last place I worked was grossly understaffed as far as aides and support staff. One week we didn't have washrags for several days. The reason was not that the laundry staff was slacking off, but that they hadn't replaced someone who quit and someone who was fired. A shocker to me was coming to work and finding that the management thought that one aide and one nurse for forty residents on a night shift was adequate. This wasn't one of the nursing homes cited! People must start learning also that non-profit doesn't mean no one is making any money. The people at the top are making plenty of money. In order to have good caretakers you have to treat them with respect. This means paying them a living wage and, even more importantly, providing enough staff to do a good job. Also, to have a superior business the management must listen to input from the workers about their job and how to make things safer and better for everyone. This isn't being done in very many places. So many nurses aides are left with debilitating back pain because there is not enough help or proper equipment to do the job safely. Remember, safety doesn't just involve the staff but directly involves the residents. We can do better but nursing homes need to be unionized, and not by the weak unions we have now. We need to do away with "no strike" clauses in contracts. Otherwise workers are stripped of effective action. Managers are going to try to get the last penny they can out of workers, so workers need to have a strong comeback to that tyranny. And I end with a toast to all those who labor with love and caring for our elderly and disabled. Their work is very difficult. It is depressing to know that things could be so much better for everyone with some real concern and implementation of some suggestions made by the workers. We need to do away with the greed at the top. A word to management: when you degrade people and give them essentially nothing to be gained from acting honorably, eventually you will have a bad problem on your hands.....
