I don't think your equation is quite right but otherwise a valid observation and advice. Your error is crucial to analysis of the problem but the suggested solution is still valid. That "3rd party" of this recent political disaster is/was not in fact the voting public. If that were true there would have been a different outcome as most polls and even daily conversations indicated the voters/taxpayers/general public wanted tax increases AND spending cuts WITH a clean debt ceiling increase. The inside the beltway anti-leadership types weren't aiming their arguments at voters -- they were and still are aiming at whoever they see as their "base" -- core supporters, the media, business/finance world & big money campaign funders (OK maybe that's redundant).
