Jim Souhan: Twins could learn some lessons from McNabb deal

Timing and value are everything in a trade, not name recognition and emotion.

I totally agree with this article. The only problem is, that the Twins GM Bill Smith, has no instincts when it comes to timing and poor judgement when it comes to knowing who to trade when.

It's kind of easy to write this column now about the most overpaid player in sports, don't you think? Would have had a lot more respect for you if you would have called his MVP year what it really was...one month where there was a power surge and the rest of the year Joe being Joe...a singles hitter with little to no impact on any given game. Little late to the party, eh?

If the Twins will regret Mauer's 84 million dollar deal, what would they think of a 184 million dollar deal? It's going to hurt the franchise for years to come.

Everybody say it with me now....184 million would have bought a lot of bullpen.

Would 184 million have paid for a roof?

I agree with Souhan, at least partly. Finding players with good skills who are performing poorly are the players to attempt to acquire. Trading away productive players during the season is a little more difficult. You don't want to deflate the teams confidence. The off season is when to trade away top performers.

Souhan has always made me scratch my head. Now all I can say is Dumb-Dumb-Dumb-Dumb!!!!!!

buntingtwinsJul. 28, 11 9:35 PM

Why would the Twins regret signing Mauer? He is playing exactly the way they should expect him to play. He's playing great. You couldn't ask anything more from him. They thought he was worth the money when they signed him. Why would they feel differently now?

buntingtwins makes a good point: winning is not just a matter of individual players' skills, it's also (at least in baseball; I don't follow football) a function of team chemistry and morale, which can be adversely affected by a midyear trade. Which leads me to something else Souhan didn't consider: maybe some of us fans care about more than just winning. I don't even live in Minnesota; if all I cared about was winning, I could just as easily root for the Yankees. Sure, I want the Twins to win, but I also want them to win the right way, and part of that is about treating people with respect, and yes, even a certain degree of loyalty. Label it "sentimental" if you want, but I think knowing that the fans like a particular player and want the team to keep him SHOULD be a factor in the GM's decision--not the determining factor, but A factor.

The Vikings' acquisition of McNabb is another dream come true for local media. I can see it already. Strib football preview section featuring McNabb columns by Souhan (pro-McNabb) and Reusse (anti-McNabb). Don't forget the story describing Joe Webb's reaction at getting to be a backup to Favre and now McNabb.
