The third baseman's batting average is nothing to brag about, but he bears down when men are on base.

1. Valencia is a .250 hitter with RISP this year, which is marginally higher than his BA. 2. He's batting .194 late-and-close. 3. He's hit 11 home runs, so he's driven in 40 teammates. But he's come up with 260 runners on base. 4. He's hitting .200 vs. RHP, and it's taken him a long time to get there from .180, .190 most of the season. 5. He's batting .214 on the road. But hey, if you cherry-pick some stats, he looks like George Brett, I guess. I won't share his defensive stats, other than on runs saved this season he's 20 runs below average, which eats up a lot of his RBI. He's a terrible base runner. At 27, he needs to pick it up, and pick it up now.

Another typical Sid column.. Full of fluff, no substance.. Tune in tomorrow to read about what Todd Walker and Rich Becker have been up to.

Valencia is a top 3 player on this team, you haters must not be watching. This kid is fun to watch play and he hits the ball hard at alot of players, bad luck. Get behind Valencia, all star next year!

lakesbiison: Valencia is a top 3 player on this team, BALLFOUR: Despite regular play, Valencia's OPS+, a fine offensive statistical measure, puts him at No. 5, among position players - barely ahead of Delmon and Morneau, who have played very little this year. If Ben Revere keeps playing, he'll pass Valencia as well. Defensively and on the bases, Revere, three years younger, passed him long ago.

Can Sid please tell me how teams like the Pirates, Brewers and Tampa can compete with small payrolls, yet we have the Yankees payroll and continue to suck?

Vikes2006Jul. 21, 1112:55 PM

No matter how much Gardy continues to express his dislike for Valencia's "cocky attitude" if the Twins do pull a miracle and play the Yanks in the playoffs and there is a situation with men on base in clutch time, I want Danny V at the plate. We've seen how Mauer, Cuddyer, Span, Kubel, etc. fare in clutch time, NADA! Let Danny be the man and just because he isn't one of Gardy's pets doesn't mean his "cockiness" is bad. The Twins could use a few more players with a cocky attitude, like Garza, Lohse, Perkins and the other guys Gardo wanted gone.

There you go Sid...other reporters are actually writing pieces calling guys out and criticizing management, and Valencia is telling you about his mom...Sid, your fruit is so low hanging its on the ground and rotting.

Danny leads the team in runners on base during his at-bats (4 more than Cuddy) he also does better at knocking in those runners than Cuddy (but he doesn't lead the team in that %), so he BETTER lead the team in RBI. However to extrapolate that into him being as valuable as Mauer, Morneau, or Span is verging on laughable. And he and Cuddy also lead the team (by a good margin) in GIDP. He isn't the goat of the season, but he also isn't a god - now matter the anecdotal "He's fun to watch play" (or is this only when he misplays a ball at 3rd? A .946 fielding % is AWFUL!!!). Lets have some perspective people.
