The shutdown means campers and others won't have access to state parks and campgrounds.

As a frequent visitor to the State Parks, it is hard to believe that this is travesty, rather an inconvenience.

"The DNR says park visitors contribute about $25 apiece daily to the state's tourism economy, which means the shutdown could cost Minnesota businesses as much as $2 million a day in revenue this holiday weekend." Wrong! Do you really think people previously planning to visit Minnesota state parks will each burn that $25 per day in their back yards? Don't you think they'll do something else instead and that something else will involve spending money at Minnesota businesses?

The only thing that SHOULD still be running are these that make the state money and the emergency essentials....EMERGENCY. Just stupid, plain stupid! I never thought I'd see the day. Common sense is far from commen.

Burn, it's probably the nearby local economy that has to survive on seasonal revenue.

We can all thank Mr. Dayton for this

To verepato, your legislators were trying to insert things such as a ban on STEM CELL RESEARCH into their proposal--and you blame Dayton??

Keep reminding yourself of Gov Dayton's campaign promise that he would NEVER let the government shutdown. The legislature, made up of members from both sides of the isle, passed a budget bill. Dayton refused to sign because it did not increase anybody's income taxes. PERIOD.

Can't believe only 7 comments. Who does the dnr think they are ? They turn off water and electric and lock the gates so the people of Minnesota can not use THERE PARKS. The people of Minnesota should hold a few protests at the State parks. The parks are owned by the people of Minnesota NOT the dnr.

My family is one of many that is NOT camping this next week, because of the STATE GOVERNMENT (not the DNR choice) SHUTDOWN. Wasn't going to comment, but's it's tiresome to read the previous Dayton/DNR/State Park-bashing comments. The state park we were planning to camp at had ALL reservable sites reserved, and I'm sure that all or most non-reservable sites also would have been taken. This IS going to impact the state, because of the lost income, and it does impact the surrounding communities.

For those interested in hiking, people should know that most of the North Shore parks are easily accesible without entering the main gate. Split Rock Lighthouse, Temperance River, Cascade River, and I think Judge Magney all have highway side parking, from where you can access all trails. You could also easily park on the highway. Plus there are many other things to go on the Shore besides State Parks. Go to the North Shore!
