Slowey and Twins slipped up

The Twins should have traded Kevin Slowey earlier and now he's forced a trade in a market that no longer values him.

You should know about be disliked.I'm sure he is the reason the Twins are the worst team in baseball.

The Twins should give him an order to go to Rochester, pitch, or, they should stop his salary. Paying a pitcher to sit on the bench shows a weakness in the system. What other business other than in sports to people get guaranteed contracts no matter how well they work.

Pretty rough assessment of a guy who had better ERA than any other starter coming out of Spring Training (1.50 in 16 innings), but got unexplainably shelved for Scott Baker, who's cool $5 million a year makes it hard to put a non-closer guy with that price tag in the bullpen - even though he's probably better suited for it. Slowey seems to be the odd man out and somehow, in spite of his consistent starting he hasn't become one of Gardenhire's golden boys. You can say he hasn't been a success in Minnesota, but it's hard to argue with the stats. He has the 56th best ERA among starters since 2008. His 1.4 BB/9in is pretty sterling too. In the past 3 years, only three guys have done better - Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Dan Haren. Not bad company. By nearly any objective measure, Slowey is one of the 100 best starting pitchers in baseball right now. I'm not saying he's ace material, but he most definitely has the goods to be a solid middle rotation starter for most MLB teams. He was never meant to be reliever, wasn't prepared by the team to be a reliever and as a result, hasn't had great success as a reliever. Surprise. If I were going to look for problems with the 5.40 ERA of the Twins bullpen, I wouldn't start with Kevin Slowey. Throw your stones elsewhere. Like Jose Mijares 11 BB in 11 innings. Or Jim Hoey's 15 hits in 8 innings. Or maybe at Joe Freakin' Nathan's 11-million dollar 7.63 ERA. Just a thought.

bottomline slowey to the pen was a front office decision. Read between the lines people, in 09 and 10 Duensing pitched spectacular and earned a spot in the 11 rotation, Baker and Blackburn were signed to longterm deals, Frankie and the stash have anchored the rotation on the past two division title teams, guess who the odd man out was and any twins fan with half a brain saw it coming. We can argue this six ways to Sunday, but Slowey's inconsistentcy has not promised him anything so i don't feel sorry for him, if he wants to start he needs to quit being a baby and go out there and take it

I can think of other Twins pitchers I would trade before Slowey!!!

Slowey is enabled to act up like this because there is no authority and no leadership on this team. That's on Gardy. Slowey is just another in a line of players telling the manager when he will and won't play, and what he should and shouldn't do. Would that happen with Maddon, LaRussa, Leyland, Guillen, Showalter... Never.

This is just another one of Smith's bungles. Slowey will be back--not with the Twins, but he'll bounce back with another team and make his millions. And we'll get squat for the trade. Conclusion? Smith has got to go!

born2playMay. 24, 1111:49 PM

Just another example of the Twins and Bill Smith's complete and utter ineptness. A family of chimpanzees would have better luck managing this team.

Maybe Slowey refuses to pitch out of the Bullpen but Joe Mauer refuses to play for the Minnesota Twins. Is there a double standard?

rustyscupperMay. 25, 1112:22 AM

I see this as being much more of a problem for the Twins than it is for Slowey. They wont get much in a trade, but he would likely benefit from one. Let the primadonna grind it out in Triple A for awhile, maybe the Twins can increase his trade value down there somehow.
