Remember when you could play at recess? Now we need "specialist" to coach are kids on the correct way to play? The "Great Dumb Down" continues. Sad.

Recess occurs during a teacher's lunch. That is why the teachers could not monitor this.

Leave the kids alone - they'll figure it out. We have become a society of eavesdropping, helicopter control freaks. Stop trying to script everything. The people wanting this never had it when they were kids - go figure.

What a waste of tax payer money. A teacher used to be able to teach their class alone..now they need "aides". (I know the class sizes have gotten bigger..deal with it.) Now don't have to do "recess duty"...but they all need more money, tenure (what a joke that is) and great retirement packages.

"Now we need "specialist" to coach are kids on the correct way to play?" Great dumb down, indeed.

imho 16---Back in your "good old days" not everyone attended the local public school. We didn't start mainstreaming special education until the middle 70's. Trouble makers were sent to reform schools up until the mid-70's. So,therefore, there weren't as many students in the schools that actually were members of the district. Classrooms have become larger and larger in the past decade. Some sit at 40 or more in some high school classes. And, remember this includes ALL students. So, if you haven't been in a classroom since the 60's or 70's, it has changed! Sometimes the teacher has to have 3 to 4 different lesson plans for the classroom. Actually, they aren't paid enough because of the amount of time outside of the classroom day is spent on lesson plans, updating of materials and grading. So let's quit bashing the teachers! They are not calling you and your job lazy, overpaid or under-performing.

Children need to be allowed to be children. Every single generation in the past has figured out how to deal with conflict on the playground. Schools have been closing and merging since the mid 70's and those kids figured it out. Let's not turn the next generation into neurotic adults who have no idea how to do anything without direction and permission from someone in authority.

We can't say kids need structure, and then turn around and say they don't need structure when it suits our agenda. Recess can be a great opportunity for teachers and other staff to work on other things, like grading or setting up the second half of the day.
